Flyers' Clarke approves Downie's actions

TSN.ca Staff

1/9/2008 2:17:31 PM

More fuel was thrown on the fire regarding Steve Downie's sucker punch Wednesday, with Philadelphia Flyers Senior Vice President Bob Clarke holding the gas can.

Clarke, who selected Downie 29th overall in the 2005 Entry Draft, told TSN's Off The Record that he enjoyed watching the rookie forward go after Toronto Maple Leafs winger Jason Blake on Saturday.

"When he went after Blake, I loved it," Clarke told TSN.

Playing in just his fourth NHL game since serving a 20-game suspension for a pre-season hit on Ottawa's Dean McAmmond, Downie punched Blake in the face while the Leafs' winger was being held by an official.

For Clarke, the rationale for Downie's actions was totally justified.

"Blake was a guy who had no problem going out and saying (Downie) should be suspended for life or suspended for the year," he explained, referring to Blake's reaction last September to the McAmmond incident. "When you say something that stupid, why shouldn't this kid go after him for it?"

The punch left a large welt under Blake's left eye but there was no structural damage. Downie was fined by league disciplinarian Colin Campbell for the incident, but did not receive a suspension.

"The kid did what every hockey player should do," added the former Broad Street Bully.

Watch the full interview on TSN's Off The Record today at 6pm et/3pm pt and in TSN.ca's video player after the show.

Think he'd have had the guts to say what he said if he were still GM?

How the Flyers organization still hasn't been fined is beyond me...

Bullshit.

The fucking WWE is "sports entertainment".

This is the NHL, a real sport, and certainly a place where there should be sportsmanship and integrity. Anyone who would rather watch some neanderthal who probably can't tie his own shoes throw sucker punches should just tape Monday Night Raw instead.

The NHL is awfully close lately....what with the Winter Classic Debacle.......phantom infractions and the no-check rule running rampant around the league. How can any league be taken seriously that has full on fisticuffs as the major draw?

Do you think any of the corporate sponsors care about integrity or sportmanship? Seriously, we sit here and clutch and grab on to the old ideals of hockey when its just not like that anymore. Before, somebody would have beat the bejesus out of an idiot like Steve Downie....now they aren't allowed so he can run around suckering daisies like Jason Blake....give me a break....they don't even care if we show up to the rink anymore.

I say f'k it. If they are content with making this league into a spectacle of laughs so be it.

Can you imagine Clarke as a kindergarten teacher?

I've cooled down substantialy since Saturday's incident & don't have as much a problem with what Downie did as I do with how the Maple Leafs reacted.

Clark, Corson, Muller, Roberts, Domi ... to name a few; that incident would never had gone over the way it did Saturday night.

Mad

Kudos for the Flyers - they have built one hell of a team in a short time. They are a pain in the ass to play against & they will make the playoffs.

I keep rewatching the video to see if I am missing something. Calling this a "sucker punch" seems highly overstated. Ya Downie got an arm free but he was being held by a linesman too - he was down on his knees and in a headlock! This is not an effective punching position or a good vantage point to see if Blake was fully tied up or not. I think Blake's eye looking so bad afterwards is either a total fluke or has something to do with Blake's lack of skin color. And it's not like Downie skated up to Blake and cracked him - it happened in a scrum that I believe Blake initiated (not sure how they got tied up back there?). Seems like the extra 2mins was very fair punishment.

Blake should really be upset because it looks like Downie may outscore him for the rest of the season.

Nice! I was going to suggest he be the victim of a drunk driver based on the WULF thread, but that's even better.

First Neilson and now Blake... it's like someone told Clarke he should work to help fight cancer and completely took it the wrong way.

Blake gave Downie a facewash, he got something back for it. Simple as that.

I agree-exactly what the team is missing, players with character that will stand up for their team mates and take care of a shitbag like Downie.
