Well, guess we'll see what happens now. Firing the GM doesn't change the idiots in charge at the top. _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

Seriously. Do these donkeys have a back-up plan or is this just a PR move to quiet the boo birds and deflect criticism away from the hydra?
I have no doubt Cliff would take this mess over a free meal in Phoenix - he's an NHL GM, which means he has delusions of grandeur and a masochistic streak. _________________ The Love Guru is a comedy like the Leafs are a hockey team. - G&M's Rick Groen

Maybe the new GM will now make moves to push this team to the playoffs.

I'm watching the press conference. Cliff looks like a very well-tanned corpse. Peddie is a complete jack off, he's smirking the entire time and attempting to explain how Leafs GM's always have autonomy.
Peddie's definitely laying blame on JFJ for the whole season, while poor ol' Cliff is trying to be classy about the whole thing. I guess that's the difference between a man and a snake.
Cliff is saying the deal is for 19-months, and he's only here to find a new GM and rebuild the team's structure. He's emphasizing drafting and scouting. Wants a GM with a track record.
They also asked him about trading Mats, and said it's up for Mats to decide because of the NTC and that he's a UFA.
Nice, a journalist just said the Leafs management only care about profit and don't care about winning a Cup. _________________ The Love Guru is a comedy like the Leafs are a hockey team. - G&M's Rick Groen

Same thing as what JFJ said when he started

Well like what Cliff was saying about being good enough to make the playoffs, but that that isn't good enough. Sounds like he is about rebuilding as Draft Schmaff does not apply to the new NHL as he even talked about free agency is not the tool it once was.
Loved when right after Peddie said there was not board interference was asked if the board rejected JFJ's request to rebuild the team and he just avoided answering the question.
They also have reference the Colangelo model as one they like with Fletcher being the Embree character.
Man I hope this isn't all a bunch of lip service. _________________ psssssssssssssshhh....bing bong ping bong bing bong...pssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhh. |

A 19-month contract to blow it up, start from scratch with drafting and developing from within, hire a GM, and then hand the puppet strings back over to the board at the end of next season? Yeah, sounds like Leaf land all right...This isn't something having Fletcher in there for one and a half seasons is going to fix...Though the biggest problem isn't likely to go away... _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

Fletcher has made some good trades for better performing players - despite Damien Cox's insinuations. The question is whether he can trade for the future while getting high draft picks. I think that trading is trading, and if the directive is to go for the future, then the Silver Fox can succeed. I wonder, however, if that is his directive.... _________________ The fans represent the soul of the organization. This is their team. Us, we simply try to make it better. I forgot how I got on their mailing list, but...
| Quote: |
Dear Jeff,
Tuesday we made a difficult decision for our hockey club. We announced that John Ferguson's contract as vice president and general manager, which expires June 30, will not be renewed and as a result he has been relived of his duties effective immediately.
These decisions are always difficult from both a professional and personal standpoint. John is as fine a man as you will meet. He's a man of the highest integrity, who withstood often unfair public criticism with dignity and class. He represented our organization and our community in a first class manner. We will always be grateful to John for his passion, dedication and commitment to putting a winning team on the ice. We wish him well in what we expect will be a long and productive hockey career.
But after thorough consideration of the Leafs situation, it became clear that change and a new direction is needed. Regrettably, we didn't win enough games and reach our goal of winning the Stanley Cup. Our record, and our opportunity to be a playoff team and compete for the Stanley Cup, has fallen short of what is expected.
The process highly-regarded by Leafs fans and by hockey people around the world. We have reached out to Cliff and his 50-plus years of hockey management experience to serve as interim general manager of the Leafs.
Cliff will have the autonomy and responsibility for all hockey matters with a focus on establishing a foundation from which the next general manager can build. He is the ideal person to lead this transition. Cliff will join prominent sports attorney Gord Kirke and me on the search team that will recommend to our board of directors the best person to serve as the next general manager of the Leafs.
We believe that being general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs is the top job in hockey. The person who fills this job will be both a long-term builder and a short-term fixer who has an established track record of success on the ice. Along with the foundation of knowledge in the areas of drafting and identifying talent in the professional, amateur and international ranks, he will work effectively with the media and be comfortable within the intense scrutiny that characterizes the Toronto hockey market.
To those of you new to Leafs Nation, Cliff served the Leafs as team president, chief operating officer and general manager between 1991 and 1997, guiding the team to the conference finals on two occasions. There's no better man in hockey to lead us successfully through the upcoming trade deadline and toward the draft and free agent signing period. His expertise affords us the opportunity to conduct our search without the constraints of time deadlines in order to bring the best general manager to Toronto.
This has been a difficult season for all of us - fans, players, coaches, and staff. While the title on my business card reads president and chief executive officer, I'm also a fan. I share the frustrations we all have felt that come with falling short of our expectations. I believe every member of our organization, myself included, can look inside themselves to find things they might have done differently to alleviate the situation we find ourselves in.
I am fully confident that we will achieve both the short-term and long-term success we all desire. And I believe the results of our efforts will bring the Stanley Cup home to Toronto where it belongs. That is the number one priority of every member of the Leafs organization.
On behalf of our entire organization, I thank you for being a valued member of our team.
Sincerely,
Richard Peddie
President and Chief Executive Officer
Toronto Maple Leaf Hockey Club |

Fletcher clearly talked of a rebuild.
Peddie clearly stated long and short term fixes.
By the deadline we will know who is really behind the wheel. Which sure beats waiting till the off season to find out. _________________ psssssssssssssshhh....bing bong ping bong bing bong...pssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhh. |

My god it is all lip service!!
Great way to kill all the puppet comments about Peddie. Watch at about five minutes in. If Peddie's hands where not on the desk I'd think they where up Fletcher's ass.
