Nothing to us, I'm afraid. I'd love to keep him, but signing him for more than one year would be a major mis-allocation of cap space.
Nobody wins picking the quiniela - you gotta pick the horse you think will win it for you, and that horse is Cryin' Carey Price. We'd still need to bring in a 1A veteran, but Huet at 5M+ per is a luxury we simply can't afford, not unlike Sheldon Souray's cannon shot and leadership. And at more than one season - he'll be a permanent back-up for us by the end of 2009.
In the cap world, we need to identify 5-6 must-keep guys, and hold on to them at all costs with long-term deals. Everyone else should be limited to 1-2 year deals and must be re-evaluated at every potential interval. If Patrick Sharp is that guy, fair enough, but a 30+ year old goaltender with two career playoff wins is not that guy.
As for Bryzgalov, there's a growing sense that letting someone get to free agency (either of the RFA or UFA variety) is a bad idea. Call it the Buffalo Sabres Lesson - the open market is too competitive now and teams are better off slightly over-paying to prevent the risk of losing quality players on the open market. I'd also say the offer sheet business will figure much more prominently, and Lowe's craziness wasn't a one-time thing.
Floundering teams with money would love to clear the decks of contracts and pick up a blue chipper coming off his entry-level deal. _________________ Beat my drum down in Mexico! To Tijuana, Tijuana here we go!

I suppose given that he's a few years older he might be scaled down a bit in terms of pay scale.
Just checked, Huet is the same age now as Fernandez was when he got his contract from the Wild. I don't mind paying Huet in the $4m range, but hopefully it'd only be a 2 year deal. _________________ It's backwards time. |

3 years, $12.75 over the course of the deal, not $16.5 million.
$4.25 for Bryzgalov for 3 years? He hasn't been a clear-cut #1 for a full season(I've always felt that he was starter material but because of who he was behind and not for lack of ability he wasn't starting), but when he was handed starting duties when Giguere was out he played very well, playoffs included. And he's been a saving grace for Phoenix. I think this is a reasonable deal for Phoenix. $5.5 would have been pretty steep looking at the goalies in that range. He's still only 27, Phoenix gave up sweet fuck all to get him, and he has plenty of good years ahead of him. _________________ Bring back the old OTP!
