If the Canucks' offer was as prospect-heavy as reported (acknowledging that all named packages were merely rumors), then I'm not entirely sure what Tampa is thinking here. Are they suddenly trying to win now? As in, this season? Is Mike Smith that much of a lynchpin? _________________

I'm happy we didn't give up what was rumored. |

Smitty has been pretty solid...he hangs in there with Turco (which may not be saying much) but for a young kid he's doing a bang-up job. Tampa scored by getting him (IMO) _________________

I won't argue Smith's effectiveness...the guy owns the Avs almost as bad as Chris Mason (not quite up there with Manny Legace though) and he could be a viable starter. But to give up one of the top-five centers in the league (even in an off-year and playing with shit linemates he still has 18 goals) for such a paltry sum is beyond ridiculous. |

I'm no Feaster fan but I don't think he did that badly. Would have been way better if he could have dumped Denis instead of Holmqvist.
Richards has a really bad contract and he has sucked this year. He has really been only the 4th best forward on that team. Prospal did better than RIchards even when they were switched for each other on the top two lines. Richards wasn't that great last year either. Needed a change of scene, or better wingers - which the team couldn't afford with him there. |

He could have gotten the far-more-proven Huet for a third-rounder. Instead he trades his #2 center for a backup who still isn't yet proven, a guy who only scores against the Avs and in shootouts, a vastly overpaid checking forward on the decline of his career. On top of that Feaster sent Dallas's way a capable backup in Holmqvist. Absolute stupidity, I'd fire him on the spot.
And again, even with crap linemates and a sub-par season, Richards still put up 18 goals and is on pace (I believe) to have over 60 points. It's not his usual great numbers but they're still pretty damned good.
Even as a salary dump it doesn't make sense. At the VERY least he could've gotten a surefire prospect or proven veteran defenseman for Richards. He got neither. |

I wonder if there is fear that if not surrounded by big time talent Richards is not going to be the Elite player he is payed to be? _________________ psssssssssssssshhh....bing bong ping bong bing bong...pssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhh. |

Well, he's a pure passer, IMO he was to Vinny what Ron Francis was to Mario. So yeah he's more dependent on top-level talent then Lecavalier is, and I believe he usually got the better linemates as a result. This year was the first where he got the shit end of the stick as far as wingers. |

I hear you, this package is not good. But I think he had to get rid of Richards for salary reasons and I can believe he wasn't getting a lot of good offers.
60 pts sucks for $7.8m especially given that he's -25, worst on the team by far. He might be an elite center in the league but he hasn't played like one for a couple years. He's not even been close to the real top centers like Lecav, Sid, Thornton, Spezza, Malkin, Datsyuk, Savard, etc. and really looking worse than even young guys like Getzlaf or even Mike Richards. So why would any GM give up a surefire prospect for him? If you do that and he doesn't improve dramatically it haunts you for years both in cap space and perception. Also, no way is a contending team going to give up a proven veteran defenseman at this stage of the season.
Maybe Feaster could have held on to him for a better deal, but Richards' value has been going down, not up, and I don't see how this was going to change as long as he stayed in Tampa.
As for Huet - he is more proven but given the trade today GMs in the league obviously don't think he has a lot of value - he's old, from France, and not really that proven. Smith is young, big and has more promise, I have heard for a couple years that GMs are drooling over him. He was pushing Turco last year. IMO Smith is a better pickup than Huet for a rebuilding team, and valued much higher in the NHL trade market, not just by Feaster.
So I agree this is a crappy return for Brad Richards who could turn it around back to Conn Smythe form, but I also believe that Feaster had to get rid of him, his value wasn't going up, and he may not have been getting any offers better than this. We'll see if descriptions of any other offers come out in the media.
To sum up this ramble, Richards is probably worth way more than this, but I can believe that nobody was willing to pay more than this due to his contract and subpar play. |
