Not a bad idea, but I think that would get vetoed by my wife... I already spend far too much time and money on my mistress, Miss seXBox 360.

Yeah, I was already thinking that I'd need a good audio card with an optical out as well as a video card with DVI or HDMI out. My brother-in-law has some movies on HD on his servers and I'd like to be able to get movies sent directly by him or downloaded from Netflix's servers to watch on this comp. I'll have to do more research on the video portion - I'm guessing that I'd need a 256mb card or more... It'd be a bonus to be able to play some PC games on there I suppose.

Strange. My 360 has the same problem if the TV is off or my HDMI switch is set at another input. Since HDMI is a two way communication it waits for the acknowledgment of the TV. I wonder if something like that is happening for you...

You can get some good 512MB vid cards now for around $200. I think I've read that the Radeon HD 3850 or 3870 cards are supposed to be better for doing blu-ray than the 8800GT or GTS, but my memory is funny on that one.
Pretty much any half-decent PCI-E vid card has 2 DVI inputs now.
John, do you have a bluetooth kb/mouse for your PS3?

Does anyone know if I load Linux on my old desktop, will it still support network file and printer sharing with other PCs and laptops that use XP?

Right click My Computer > Properties
Advanced > Click the settings button under Startup and Recovery
There will be a check box next to Automatically restart. Uncheck it if it is checked.
Now if it bluescreens you will be able to see it instead of XP just rebooting. Hopefully that will get us more info.

I'll try it when I get home. I'll have to look because it's not restarting, it's completely shutting down.
I'm guessing it's the power supply. It was running really hot for a long time and I found out it was a fan that pretty much wouldn't turn any more, so the PS was heating up just trying to turn the thing. It was a stock 450W in the Antec Sonata II, which is supposed to be a good PS, but after 2+ years and that and some incresed system load it might be time for a new one.
Found an awesome review on a PC Power and Cooling 610W PS and I've found them priced around $110. Might have to look into one...

Open Windows Media Player.
Tools>Options
Library
Configure sharing.
Check the share my media to box.
Hit settings and set it up how you want.
Go back to the library tab.
Monitor Folders.
Set that up as you want.
It might take a few minutes to scan your media.
When it is done boot up the PS3 and go to any of the media selections on the XMB (video/music/photo) and you should see a link for your computer on there. (Mine looks like a media player logo with the label "Sheila:Chuck:". Sheila is my computer name, Chuck is my name and the name I set as the share in Windows Media Player.)
Let me know if that works.

It was definitely checked. Not sure when I'll be able to play for a while again to see what happens with it unchecked...maybe I'll be able to this weekend. There's no entries in eventvwr that look like they could be related to it.
I haven't seen it with NHL08, GHIII, Cod4...only Oblivion.

Depends on the flavor.
download either mint or ubuntu and give them a whirl from the live cd.
the new version of ubuntu can be installed within windows too.
they should give you a good feel for it.
Without doing anything I have no problem accessing all the files on my wife`s computer through our router using mint.
I haven`t tried to use her printer yet though...

ok I will try it again. when I configure sharing it just hangs. I've tried it with all of my computers. I will try it again.

| I think/hope I figured out why my MB was frying my video cards... I had a bad overclock setting? So no more overclocking , dont really need it with modern hardware anyways. I fried my first two SLI cards then I bought a new card last month and I thought I fried that one too this week... reset the MB to default and the card works again. The first two video cards are fried though , one literally caught fire and the other also has smoldering black around one chip or something. Hopefully this is the fix.. its only been a couple days so wait and see if I have another complete shutdown. |

Okay, my first foray into this has started out very modestly...
My wife's laptop has been doing some very annoying things like appear busy even when nothing is running - to the point that my ancient 1.4 GHz Pentium running XP was outperforming it... So I contacted Dell and they walked me through:
1) Updating the video and audio driver - initially, this problem was most obvious when we tried to watch any kind of video online (youtube, etc.) - problem persisted...
2) Restoring the system to factory settings - this one failed...
3) Third time "lucky" - I finally got through to a tech who seemed to really want to help me last night... He advised me that I needed to re-format the HD and re-install the OS, drivers and apps . So I backed up my wife's files using the Winblows Backup utility onto my old Pentium.
Well, I grinded out the re-formating and install of OS, etc. It came time to restore the files from the backup... I click on the files/folder to backup from and just as it started (about 60MB out of 30GB), the old Pentium downloaded some Norton updates and rebooted itself right in the middle of everything... So I go to restart the restore and lo and behold but he backup file is fucking GONE. Spent the next two hours trying to find that lost file - downloaded some utilities to try to help me do that... so far nothing... Finally at 5:30 in the morning, I stumble into bed and the laptop is restoring off a backup I did two months ago... I still have some more files stored in Symantec's online servers but that is limited to 2GB - hopefully I can get back the most current Outlook folders (the most critical) as well as some other recent files.
The positive out of all of this is that at least I know how to do all of this including downloading the latest drivers... Pain in the fucking ass and the laptop still isn't 100%.
So now the Dell tech is trying to sell me an 80GB external HD as a second backup... $65 after mail in rebate... Sounds expensive given that I can get a 500GB USB for around $100.
