This one won't die. For the life of me I can't figure out why the Flames want that floater Kovalev....but I suppose Tanguay needs to be moved....can't we get someone cool like Doan........ Rolling Eyes

It doesn't make much sense, in reality. Keenan had Kovalev once and has never tried to acquire him since. He had Kovy as a rookie and was quite hard on him. The rumor is based on false assumptions about their relationship.

I definitely wouldn't call '94 blood from a stone...Keenan had the highest payroll in the league, one of the league's recent MVP's and huge clutch performers in Messier, Leetch in his prime, Zubov and Kovalev playing maybe his best hockey of their careers, and a great clutch goalie in Richter.

Well I disagree Kovy was playing the best hockey of his career--he put up decent enough numbers but it was Graves and Mess who made that top line so dominant. A Rags jersey is kryptonite to Kovalev, who didn't do shit his second time in NY either. Naw, it was as a Pen he did his very best. The rest of your assessment though I agree with. I believe every single trade acquisition the Rags made that year panned out--from Noonan to Matteau to Tikkanen to Larmer to MacTavish, amazing they needed all that and those players you mentioned to edge out the Canucks...

ah yes....bow before Adam Graves......

Well I refer to blood from a stone being the Ranger's franchise but whatever....

Let's look at contracts

Tanguay is signed through 08/09.

for 5.375 per year.

Kovalev is the same story however a little cheaper at 4.5 per.

Not sure how that clears the way for the Dion. I suppose I still don't understand the reasoning behind this ugly rumour.

The Dion is going to command at least 4 per year.

Unfortunately there is a debacle log jam at D. Erickkson is a waste of cap space at 1.5 Mil. Aucoin is 4 per year. Sarich is signed until the end of time at an average of 3.5 per year. Regehr is paid 4 mil per year until the end of time as well. Even Warrener gets 2.5.

As I see it the reason for the Tanguay/Kovalev move is to qualify Dion at 1.5 Mil for 1 year until they can free up 8 mil with the departure of Aucoin, Warrner and Erickson in 09/10.

Numbers courtesty of http://www.nhlnumbers.com/overview.php?team=CGY

I still don't honestly see how this is beneficial to Calgary. Tanguay is at least twice a better player than Kovalev.

The main difference between Tanguay and Kovalev is, as others already eluded to, Tanguay maybe more consistent but when Kovalev is at his best he can dominate a game. Both can set up plays but Kovalev is a freakin sniper when he is playing his best (i.e. the goal the other night was sick).
