I think it's high time we had this kind of thread.

I'll start - I hate it when prosecutors make bad decisions based on rogue police conduct, and then the judge turns a blind eye at the end of the day. That's not justice...

Oh and my client's decision to have a trial despite having no valid legal defence is one which will cost me $600 in billings tommorrow...

I hate bad days at the office...

I'm showing a guy the ropes that they are grooming to replace me. Mad

I can deal with them doing that, so goes capitalism. it's them acting or thinking I do not know it that ticks me off.

Sometimes I really wonder how the fuck the people in charge got to be in charge.

I pretty much like all the people I work with here in this office (all 120+ of them) with the notable exception of two extraordinarily incompetent project managers. I cringe every single time they walk in my office because I know every single job they hand me, no matter how small, will blossom into a complete clusterfuck. The funniest part is that it's readily apparent to EVERYONE they're complete fuckups to the point that none of the other designers want anything to do with them, and yet they both hold associate positions here. Unreal...

My manager just got promoted and shipped off to another office 3 weeks ago. Why did he get promoted you ask?

Well, in government, sometimes they move a manager and promote them to get them away from the 3 staff members who have filed grievances against him. Including myself.

If you can't fix the problem management, you promote them out of the environment they have poisoned.

Rolling Eyes

(and no, my grievance and the 2 others were not finalized before he moved on)

Congratulations, man!

As for me, I've just switched into government -- they haven't given me proper Internet access yet, hence my partial disappearance from OTP.

Sometimes it rains and I have to move heavy cases of show stuff into a school gym. Sometimes it's a long way to cary stuff and they won't let me drive through the school grounds to just dump stuff in the school...

Oh yeah and I had to stay in a B+B without a television last night.

that kinda sucked...

I certainly enjoy speaking to people that have a limited command of the English language all day long. I wonder where all this "cost savings" is getting my company.

So I thought I had an excellent year this past year... Enough to rate a top rating of 3/3, or so my supervisor and I thought. Well, lo and behold, just about everyone in my department was rated by their supervisors as 3/2 or 3/3, so our VP has decreed that only a handful of 175 people will get 3/3s... I and the rest of the great unwashed will get 2/2 (average), "Which is still very good" Rolling Eyes Bollocks... So once again, the difference between a great performer and an average performer is about 1%. I feel so Dilbert. Nothing like STILL being graded on a bell curve at this age... Mad

Ah, but work is its own reward!

(I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.)

Rant time.

From noon onward this week, the taxpayer in B.C. is taking it up the pooper shooter LARGE from the justice system. The judges are off to their "conference" in Victoria, and the Crown is off to their "conference" in Whistler.

If you actually think they'll be doing a wit of work, I have some oceanfront property in Arizona to sell you...

This is all financed by Joe Taxpayer... they need a retreat, the poor souls...

So today, we're told they're shutting court down at noon. Fine. I have a fairly busy day (12 clients on the list), not gross, and usually manageable. However, one by one these fucking judges start announcing at about 10 that they're only going to sit to 11. Then one judge, who will obviously remain nameless, gets annoyed with me because I'm not ready to go with him at 11 - I haven't seen him in cells yet and, of course, the judge is anxious to get out of Dodge. So we end up adjourning the matter, I say something accidental that pisses off the Crown, and then catch shit from the sherriffs for being too busy...

The judges are already fucking the dog for half a day today anyway.... I don't actually have a problem with them buggering off at 11, because they need to do that to make a 1 oclock boat to Vancouver Island. But... could ya maybe TELL US so we don't have angry clients wondering why we brought them to court for nothing???

I appreciate that your $250,000 salary, six figure pension plan, 8 weeks of holidays, and one "chambers" day every five work days doesn't offer you the necessary creature comforts for people of your esteemed distinction, but if you're going to go on a taxpayer funded bender, at least have the decency to tell us the exact parameters of said binge...

Rant over (and I hope to God none of our posters are provincial court judge's in disguise Laughing )

Mad

Give 'em hell Razz!

I'm about to load up my new lackey with tasks since I've discovered that he's been responsible for about 20 hours worth of work PER MONTH for the last 10 years while collecting $80k/annum in salary. Fucking unions.

Something really weird about having to micro-manage a guy who is the same age as my dad and has been with the company since before I was born.

My dad fired a guy in that exact situation. Took him a year to do it and 18 months of severance, but bye bye...

In addition to the occasional wedding dj gig on a weekend here or there, I only work about 15 to 20 real weeks per year. I have fairly high daily rate and a damn good accountant. I wish I worked more.

WHat's your rate for throwing out the first pitch for Razz's baseball team's home opener?

I don't have much bad to say about my new job yet. But ask me again when the store actually opens and I have to deal with customers.

Though tonight they kept promising we'd get to go home at least an hour early but thye kept finding stupid stuff for us to do. Things that could have waiting 'til tomorrow. We got out 15 minutes early.

I'll do that for free / lunch if I can fit it in. If it's at all tight I can't - I think my show is at 2pm which would make a 12noon pitch impossible as I'll probably be doing a technical run through at that time to get the lighting guy on board...

Today was "Employee appreciation" day at the call center where I work. They served free gourmet coffee in the lunch room, had a manager wearing a stupid party hat shake everyone's hand on the way in, and had draws all day for fancy prizes and stuff.

The last time my company held a special event on a Thursday was "nacho day" 2 years ago. They served some stale chips and store brand runny salsa for the day, and then figured that pretty much made them even with the great Karmic wheel when they laid about 100 people off the next day with no notice and cut everyone else's hours back (remember that scene in Office space where they talk about delivering bad news on a Friday, because statistically it reduces the chance of any "incidents"?). Now, bear in mind, "natcho day" did not involve any gourmet coffee or expensive prizes.

Needless to say, everyone is terrified about what is going to happen tomorrow. Wink

Personally, I am kind of looking forward to tomorrow. Friday also happens to be "dress like a pirate day" (they have a special commitee that meets every week to figure out what everyone is supposed to dress as on Friday. They call it "Friday fun-day", and consider it a huge driver for employee morale.), so whatever happens to me or my job, I figure it will all be worth it for the comedy GOLD sure to follow!

Sometimes the disconnect with HR in thinking what the Peons need for moral is rather shocking. Particularly I would guess in the Tech industries where just by human nature Tech types and HR types are going to often be very different personalities.

I did a report/presentation last year called "How to Fire Someone!". One of the things I discovered in the research is that people are almost twice as likely to go home and blow their brains out if you fire them on Friday. Monday gives them a chance to start the search for a new job immediately. Friday forces them to sit and home and stew.

And that is absolutely fucking brutal timing on your employers part to run the nacho day immediately before massive layoffs. How can anyone even enjoy one of these "appreciation days" with that looming?

Now for my rant about my "promotion"

I'm being asked to take on 100% of the duties that my manager was covering as well as maintaining everything I currently do. I'm being offered roughly 3/4 the salary of my predecessor and they are stripping the manager title away from the position even though I'm in charge of the same # of people he was and am in charge of even more projects and way more dollars.

All this has been thrown down by my new boss who took me out for lunch for a succession planning discussion and told me I was on the radar screen of the top dogs in the company because I've been rated in the top 10% every year with the company and apparently have really good leadership potential. Talk about blowing smoke. Do they really think that a guy busting his balls like I do and earning that top 10% ranking isn't smart enough to see a staggering contradiction? And they wonder why they've been having an "employee retention crisis" over the past couple years.....

I guess the message I'm to take away is they trust me enough to do all the work and then some of my predecessor, but they don't respect me enough to give me the manager title.

Something tells me I'll be putting my MBA to use and going to work for one of the banks by the end of the year.
