Say what you want, but Roy in four years has pretty much revitalized junior hockey in Quebec, more than even Sidney. Whenever a game between bitter rivals Quebec and Chicoutimi takes place, the players need police escorts just to get to their buses.

I'm a bit surprised just how much traction this story is getting. Craig Oliver (CTV's Ottawa Parliamentary Bureau Chief) was in Quebec City this past weekend for the big Pee-Wee Championships, and he filed a news report on the incident. Imagine John King at CNN filing a report on NCAA basketball or something to that effect.

In a sense it's a black eye for junior hockey because its fighting, but in reality the hockey commnity loves this and hockey fans are gravitating back to the junior game in this province. I think we'll see a relocation of Lewiston soon, maybe to Boisbriand or Riviere-du-Loup (two places that were discussed before).

Looks like he learned to fight watching his dad the husband...not the player.

Okay I admit that was maybe a little much.

I knew the token Quebec-centric bullshit was coming, just a matter of from whom. By all accounts Roy jumped a goalie who wanted no part in the fight... That's not fighting, that's thuggery... throw the book at him and his wife-beating dad...

Uh... where is the "token Quebec-centric bullshit" in any of this?

Kidding aside I do have a problem with the three win 3.96 GAA Roy trying that hard to get at a starter that wants nothing too do with it.

back to kidding...anyone know if Vernon has a son?

Well, Canada's and Quebec's obsession with hockey at the expense of the real world is an entirely separate matter.

However, I think it's an incident worthy of some infamy. The word "classless" is so overused in sports circles, but come on, that is classless with a capital 'K'. (So it's Klassless, really). All goalie fights are stupid in that there's never any real-life grievance involved. But it's particularly egregious here, because the guy wanted no part of it, and all Jonathan Roy was doing was hurting someone because he wanted to. That's like the stereotypical drunken lout trying to pick a fight with anything that moves -- it's dangerous, and criminal the second he touches someone, as it should be.

The site hosting it says it well:

I'd pay good money to watch that fight.

If I were reffin that game I surly would have let whoever from the other team step on on Roy's fight and pound the tar out of him.

DAMMIT...I missed out on a great headline for this thread. Just thought of it now.

Like Roy-ther, like son.

That's just gold right there. Solid f***ing gold.

Anyhow, both Wa's have been suspended, and deservedly so.

Hey I still love the guy, but this was definitely out of line.

CBC blogger thinks P. Roy would be an excellent fit as the Avalanche's next coach.

http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/marek/2008/03/patrick_roys_coaching_future_s.html

I think this does nothing to hurt Roy's reputation among hockey people, and the backlash seems to be coming from the usual anti-hockey jihadists anyway. Not that I'm condoning what happened, I'm just saying junior hockey has seen its fair share of fisticuffs and this particular incident won't force us to re-examine our values.

The suspensions were deserved - anything else that happens afterwards will likely only come from the court of public opinion.

Roy ought to stay where he is with people of a similar maturity level.
