I was not expecting Cody Hogdson to be available still and I kinda think the Canucks didnt either. Not that I know anything about him but he seemed to be a top 5-6 pick all year.

Excellent pick. I know the head of marketing for the Battalion, and he says this kid is just a born leader. I think he was wearing an A in his 2nd season as a 17 year old last season, and he'll be the captain of the Batallion next season. Lots of skill, can play in all situations, and has a shitload of hockey smarts.

Im happy they drafted a skilled centre.

Cody HOdgson

5-11 180 shoots:right

Quote:
Cody has great speed and is very strong on his skates. He has an amazing first few strides that gets him to open ice fast!

His shot is above average and he is very accurate with it. I have seen him score from just about everywhere on the ice. He's used on the PK and is very dangerous, he anticipates the play very well and gets turnovers because of it.

Smart player who can be played in all situations, keeps getting better. I wish he played for another coach as I think Butler holds back his total offensive potential. Flying up the draft board and is a fave of HockeyProspect.com - had the chance to coach against him a few years back, he is a game plan changer. Opposing coaches earn their cheque figuring out ways to shut him down.

Cody Hodgson sounds like a right handed version of Mike Richards. I would be ecstatic with that.

Rd 2 41st overall: D Yann Sauve

Quote:
Sauve, 18, was a member of Saint John in the 2007-08 season where he recorded 21 points (6-15-21) and 92 penalty minutes in 69 games played. The 6’2”, 209 lbs defenceman played in the 2008 CHL Top Prospects game, picking up one assist.

In 2007, Sauve participated in the 2007 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka Tournament and was named an assistant captain for Team Canada. He was also one of two 15-year-olds named to the Quebec team that competed at the 2006 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Regina, Saskatchewan.

Sauve played Midget AAA for the Chateauguay Patriotes before being selected first overall by the Sea Dogs in the 2006 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Draft.

He was born on February 18, 1990 in Rigaud, Quebec.

Is he any relation to Dan Hodgson?I believe he was another draft from years past in which we had high hopes that were never realized.Anyway the kid sounds good and it looks like we got a bit of a steal by getting him in the 10th spot Cool

When Nashville and CBJ picked Wilson and Filatov , leaving Boedker , Beach , Hodgson for the next three picks , I thought we're getting somebody with high potential for sure but didnt expect to have a choice between them still. Not suprised Gretzky and co went Boedker but once again the NYI throw in the monkey wrench with Bailey leaving both Beach and Hodgson available. I honestly believe the CAnucks were stunned Hodgson was still there.

I would love to hear the convos in the scrums down on the floor. There must have been guys pushing for Beach vs Hodgson.

I just heard Tamby discuss Yann Sauve , first thing out his mouth and focused on " tremendous leadership skills" .. sounds like a career 3rd pairing guy with guts and grit ... I proclaim him to be the next Larry Melnyk!

From TSN: The big, strong, physical blueliner who models his game on Dion Phaneuf's is sometimes too aggressive for his own good, taking himself out of position, but he is most certainly a work in progress. One of his claims to fame is that he fought Steven Stamkos in the CHL Prospects game. He started this season as a projected first rounder but will have to improve his decision-making to get back to that status.

From NHL Central Scouting: Yann is a defenceman who, when he is on, can be one of the best defencemen in all the Quebec League and all of junior hockey. With continued development and maturity, as well as experience on when to dish the puck and when not to dish the puck, projects to be a solid defenceman. He needs to improve on a little bit of poise and calmness with the puck. He is good with the puck but sometimes gives it away too abruptly and it results in turnovers.

Report on Hodgson from TSN:

PROFILE
Pos: Centre
Shoots: R
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 185 lbs.
Born: 02/18/1990
From: Markham, ON
Team: Brampton (OHL)
RANKINGS
TSN: 9
CSB: 9 NAS
ISS: 9
RLR: 9
McK: 9
THN: 8
Comparable: Chris Drury

From TSN: One scout dubs the Brampton Battalion forward as the sleeper of this year's draft, a complete package forward who maybe isn't as big or as fast or as purely skilled as some, but one who puts all elements of his game together as well as just about anybody in this draft class. "He's really not that far off Stamkos," the scout said. The folks at Hockey Canada would concur. Hodgson was the best Canadian at the recent Under-18 world tourney and displayed terrific leadership and character, plus an ability to score big goals and be the team's defensive conscience up front. He might be hurt by the tag of being an average skater and sub-six feet tall, but some scouts figure he has a lot of Chris Drury in him.

From NHL Central Scouting: He is a very skilled centerman who's hockey sense has him quarterbacking the power-play from down at the half boards. He knows when to shoot and when to pass – his point total reflects that. He's also a good face-off guy; he can take face-offs with the best of them and win them at the OHL level.

Year Team GP G A Pts Pim
2007-2008 Brampton (OHL) 68 40 45 85 36
2008 Playoffs Brampton 5 5 0 5

Report from CANUCKS .COM:

PRAB RAI - 131st overall (5th round)

Rai
The Canucks went local with their 5th round pick Saturday selecting Surrey native Prab Rai with the 131st pick.

Much like 2005 second-round pick Mason Raymond, Rai is described as a blazing fast forward who can make plays at top speed.

Thunderbirds coach Rob Sumner calls Rai a “special player” who gets up to speed quickly and makes good decision.

Rai joined the WHL with the Prince George Cougars as a 16-year-old. In 38 games he scored five goals and had 15 penalty minutes.

Limited ice time through 24 games with the Cougars last season led Rai, then 17 years old, to seek a trade. He was moved to the Seattle Thunderbirds and racked up 19 points with five goals and 14 assists in 38 games. He had a plus/minus rating of minus-4 with 18 penalty minutes. The 6’0”, 191-pound right winger also played in 11 playoff games with Seattle, registering six points (2-4-6) and four penalty minutes.

Nicknamed “Rajin” by his mom, Rai is a player who has flown under the radar in his junior career, but one who makes a difference every time he’s on the ice.

Rai played for Team Canada in the 2005-06 World under-17 Championships.

Report on Mats Froshaug from canucks.com:

MATS FROSHAUG - 161st overall (6th round)

Froshaug
Mats who? Froshaug what? That was likely the reaction throughout Vancouver Saturday as the Canucks selected Norwegian national Mats Froshaug 161st overall in the 2008 NHL entry draft.

The rangy center had a very strong showing on the international stage where he undoubtedly caught the eyes of the Canucks scouting staff. With 4 goals and 3 assists in 5 games for Norway at the World Juniors it was easy for the 6' 1" 198-pound Froshaug to stand out on a traditionally weak team.

Froshaug was later named to the Norwegian roster for the 2008 World Hockey Championship and he once again proved he could play. Despite not mustering any points, the 19-year-old looked consistently dangerous despite being overmatched against much older and much more experienced NHL defensemen.

Scoring 18 goals and 18 assists this year in 35 games in the Swedish Junior League, Froshaug is a promising project player who has already filled out his frame and could make the jump to the North American game with relative ease. His sound offensive skills, consistency in the defensive zone, and his size make Froshaug a complete package.. Thomas Gradin continues to build his solid reputation for finding European gems.

Report on Morgan Clark from Canucks.com

MORGAN CLARK - 191st overall (7th round)

Clark
Son of Canucks goaltending consultant Ian Clark, Morgan Clark tended goal for the Red Deer Rebels of the WHL last season posting one shutout, a record of 10-30-3 and a 3.70 GAA. In 38 games played, Clark had a save percentage of .884..

Listed at 5’10”, 150-pounds, Clark, 18, isn’t a imposing figure in the crease, but is a sound, technical goalie with a never-say-die attitude.

Clark was born on February 17, 1990 in Highland Village, Texas and was the only native of the Lonestar State to play in the WHL last season.

Not a big fan of Yann Sauve. He was really highly regarded when he was in midget. People were talking like he could be the next Pronger and other hyperbole. Truth is he was just physically more mature than everyone else his age, but as an 18 year-old in the Q wasn't all that dominating.

He might be a born leader, but he makes bad, overly aggressive passes out of the zone.

He's a big kid, but he doesn't hit people enough.

Based on skill he should have been a first rounder, but his game looked pretty suspect last year. Reminds a bit of Esposito in terms of peaking early.
