If you actually knew anything about Montreal or Boston you'd realize how ridiculous it is to suggest that Montreal fans are somehow out of line with their behavior in Boston. I grew up in Montreal and went to high school and college there. Whenever the Bruins were in town for a weekend game Crescent Street bars and St. Catherine strip clubs were overrun with Bruins fans. Loud, boisterous Bruins fans, often singing, chanting and yelling on the street. There was never any doubt the Bruins were in town. Some fans were obnoxious, and there were often brawls, and some were friendly and cool. I expect it is the same with Montreal fans in Boston. There is a long tradition of fans going back and forth between the cities and obnoxious behavior is definitely not one-sided.

You are correct sir. When the Bostoners and upstate NYers strike, most of us avoid Crescent and Ste-Catherine Street nudie bars like a clam chowder stenched plague. When F1 weekend hits -- forget it -- I'm hiding up in Parc Ex and waiting for the shit storm to die down.

Lest we forget, one of my favourite clubs, L'X, closed down because a bunch of drunk Bostoners smashed all the windows there after being kicked out for drinking too much.

Aaaahhh, yes..the Original Six. I was not 'born' in a hockey environment. I came to Michigan more than 20 years ago and was told by my new friends that if I didn't learn the game of hockey, they would ship me back to California in a box. And learn hockey, I did. I not only learned about the game but learned the history (my friends kept giving me books). I was in Michigan about 3 months when a person at work mentioned Gordie Howe.....I made the mistake of saying"Who?". My collegue, Brian said, "I'll forgive you this once because you are from California. But if you ever do that again, I'll shoot you in the head." BTW, he gave me my first book in the history of the NHL. Now, maybe I'm not worthy, but I am PROUD that "my team" is one of the Original Six. I venture to say that most, if not all, of the fans today were not alive when these 6 teams slugged it out, year after year. They never saw Guy LeFleur play..they never saw Terry Sawchuck or Gordie Howe. So, when did this "new" rivalry start? Possibly because the 'youngsters' were taught by their families. If one grows up in a hockey environment, one is going to learn the history. But there hasn't been a 'current' rivalry for quite a few years. So, what is it? Any team, anywhere, can and does have devoted fans. That devotion does not always lead to violence. So why now? I'm afraid that all this recent violence is due more to the current generation of fans than to any hockey rivalry. It is not "Montreal" fans or "Boston" fans. What this is, is the total lack of respect that some "young" people have for any other human being. I give you Columbine and Virginia State as examples. All these people need is an excuse to do violence. This is a very sad state, but it is the world we live in. So all your arguments about Montreal or Boston are really irrevelent. "Lack of respect" is definitely how I would describe a small, segmented population of people who caused significant damage last night in Montreal. It was a mix of gang members looking to improve their local rep, jerks who had planned to set cop cars on fire, and a few drunkards (likely McGill students) who liked the idea of smashing things up. Truth is right after the game, I was soaking in glorious experience. Imagine everyone congregating in the streets, giving each other hugs, high-fives. Total strangers were smiling at each other. Montrealers of every race, religion, age and language celebrating what should have been, and frankly remains in my eye, a reason to be proud of our city. It was later on, after most of the normal people had left, around 1:00 AM, when the vultures came out to take advantage of the situation. It wasn't someone like me who torched a cop car or smashed a window, and in fact a lot of us tried to stop these psychos who seemed to emerge from the shadows with the idea of causing trouble. I agree with you both. It could happen in any city and with any sporting event. I know it's not just hockey playoff madness. Look at Boston after their World Series win, and the rioting after the Super Bowl games.

It happens everywhere - and Canadians are not exempt. Look at Vancouver during their last play-off run - weren't those riots also a disgusting display of how a few people ruin it for everyone by letting things get completely out of hand?

And as for Razz, he was not personally attacking anyone here on the forum - he was just making broad accusations/generalizations that were so obviously meant to provoke. It didn't have to become a personal gang-up and attack on him.

If you kids can't play nicely, I will stop this car right now and turn around and smack the both of you!

My brother was at game 7 ( He still lives in Mtl) and he too was trying to stop these morons and helping the police when he could. It's really pissing me off how a couple of these idiots, who aren't even hockey fans are tarnishing a city's reputation. Mad

As EL mentioned, and from what my Brother told me last night, a lot of people were trying to stop these idiots. Nice to hear.
