So in the end what is more important? Bigger markets and stars making it far in the postseason or a team in a smaller market who may offer a more fun, more watchable on-ice product?
I realize with the Rags you have to factor in the argument as to whether having absolute slimeballs on your roster negates your big market postseason success... |

You've just had three straight small market finals and the ratings got worse every year until last years debacle with the worst ratings of all time during the Cup Finals. For financial reasons alone I would think the NHL would want two big market teams like the Rags, Detroit or the young star laden Pittsburgh / Washington teams in the Finals. I personally want an Original 6 Final between Detroit and Montreal. That would be pure magic. If not Montreal my choices would then be Detroit / Rangers, another Original 6 pairing, or Detroit / Pittsburgh just becase thats series would be so much fun to watch. As a hockey fan if Colorado, Dallas or San Jose make it instead of Detroit it will still make for a great finals with plenty of excitement even for the US market. I'm a geek so I'd even watch with Calgary in the finals. An all Canada, Calgary / Monteal, re-match would be fun for me but it would kill ratings in the US. _________________ "The greatest victory a man can win is victory over himself."

I'm resigned to the fact that regardless of who plays in the final, interest in the NHL will remain a strongly regional. Therefore logically, having the Rangers/Sharks could be the best case scenario if the NHL still cares about national numbers.
They probably shouldn't bother, though.
I will say that news interest in the playoffs has been high in the States, relatively speaking. When I'm listening to Giants games the announcers seem to talk just as much about the Sharks. _________________ John McCain is fit as a fiddle… Is 71 the new 30?” - Fox News' Rich Lowry
