If so a loop hole was there and could be exploited I'd actually let JFJ keep his job for another year. The Leaf hate though would become something to behold.
Obviously this would be doubtful at best, but interesting all the same.

I don't really see the loophole here. Any NHL team can "ask" any eligible player not to sign with his team and hope he becomes a free agent.
Signing him to an AHL contract has no real bearing on that. _________________

1) Juniors are under contract to their team for 4 years. Can they sign an AHL contract while still under contract to their junior team?
2) After his 4 years is up and he gets drafted, is he allowed to sign with an AHL team even though an NHL team holds his rights?
3)

By offering a deal for at least three years or longer, the source said Ferguson hopes to convince Tavares to remain Leaf property and opt out of the NHL draft. Tavares is eligible for the 2009 entry draft.
Under the collective agreement, if a player refuses to sign with the NHL team that drafts him and does so for the next two years he becomes a free agent. That means Tavares could become an unrestricted free agent in 2011, when he turns 21, and sign an NHL contract with the Leafs. |
Are players able to opt out of the draft? And what about getting re-drated if you don't sign a contract with the team that first drafted you? _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

Err, I'm pretty sure players under 20 still under contract by their junior teams cannot play in the AHL.
Trust me, if this could work, smarter men than JFJ would have tried it. _________________ I need a vacation, sigh

Their junior contracts last 4 years. Tavares will be 18 or just turning 19 when his runs out. _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

So true, but maybe the agent after being contacted by said smarter man then called JFJ? _________________ It's not you Sundin, it's me...please just leave...and don't look back....please please do not look back. |

This actually isn't that bad of a ploy. Of course, the most likely senario is that we pay Tavares a bunch of money to play on the farm team and then he gets drafted away normally, but like the article says, the Leafs can sure as hell afford it, and if the gamble works it could make a huge difference in the long run.
Tavares may not be as good as, say, Tlusty, but I'm sure he will do OK. _________________ (Working in a Call Centre) + (Being a Leafs Fan) = (One HUGE glutton for punishment)

Maybe the league adjust the rules to keep the five days or whatever it is not keep him out of this years draft?
Thus still allowing the Leafs a really good shot at him through normal channels. _________________ It's not you Sundin, it's me...please just leave...and don't look back....please please do not look back. |

I could see the NHL getting the AHL to block him from playing in the league, taking away one of the cookies the Leafs had offered (playing pro at his age nearby). _________________ "Oh my God. | Genius move by JFJ - get Toronto fans and ownership exposed to Tavares now so they fall in love with him and they will rally with support for JFJ because everyone knows that if he stays in charge the Leafs will be a lock for that #1 pick to draft Tavares in two years. |

| If I'm not mistaken, Tavares wouldn't be a free agent in 2011. If he didn't sign with an NHL team, he would go back into the draft as a re-entry. At least that is my understanding. |
That's what I figured, unless it's changed in the new CBA.

Besides, this three-year contract scenario would clearly be considered an attempt to circumvent the NHL Collective Bargaining Agreement and the league has by-laws to deal with such things. And the notion of Tavares waiting until 2011 to play in the NHL? C'mon, now, Earth to McFly, the kid would prefer to get there a year early, in 2008, instead of having to wait until his draft in 09. Does it make any sense he would wait another two years, to 2011, just for the right to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs?
(Insert Leaf joke here). |

lol - I got a kick out of that too.
I also heard a rumor that JFJ and Buttman are in talks to exempt the Leafs from the cap because Buttman likes the Leafs so much. They're just negotiating the period. Buttman wants 25 years, and JFJ wants 50. Honest. |

Heard JFJ on the radio talking about this and his claim was they approached him to play only for the year before his draft as he heard he may go to Europe to play that year out and wanted to let him know if he wanted to play something above major junior till the draft the Marlies could be an option. _________________ It's not you Sundin, it's me...please just leave...and don't look back....please please do not look back. |
