I quit watching when Hartnell scored to make it 2-0. That killed the season right there.

The Habs have four unrestricted free agents. Let 'em all walk. Hopefully Streit finds a team that knows how to use him. Hopefully Ryder finds someone that believes in him. I don't care what happens to Smolinski. Brisebois can retire with his head held high.

I don't know who the Habs should target in the offseason, and frankly right now I don't care. All I know is I'm pissed off because they choked and blew a fucking brilliant opportunity. The East has proven in the playoffs to be the shittier conference, only Pittsburgh can compete with the best of the West.

In short, the Habs may have come a long way this year, but there's a hell of a lot of growing still left to do to actually win anything.

And Carbo has a LONG way to go.

I still think we're going to win the series, for what it's worth.

Carbo has proven he's a good motivator, no surprise there, but as a tactician he leaves much to be desired. He gambled the team would play better in front of a different goalie. He was wrong.

The team could use another offensive catalyst on defense. Markov is great and all (well I guess not this season from what you guys are saying) but he could sure use some help. And no, I don't mean Breezy. If they got the cap room, it wouldn't be a terrible idea to try signing John-Michael Liles away from us. His market value will be a little lower because he had an off year, but the guy when he is on is a fantastic puckmover and knows exactly when to jump in on the play. If he could only get that awesome slapshot of his on net a little more often, he'd be a bona fide #1-2 guy.

In hindsight, Gainey also miscalculated by once again doing virtually NOTHING at the trade deadline. He should have recognized that a team built for the regular season and a team built for the playoffs are two different things. Mind you, I'm not entirely sure who he should have gotten, but as silly as it sounds, making a move at the deadline is as much about making a statement as it is getting that last piece to take your team to the next level. Gainey needs to stop playing it safe.

Yes, let the FA's walk. Streit's good, but you guys need something else. Ryder just needs a change of scenery.

Oh well, next year we get to see (hopefully) a full year from perennial Selke candidate (and I'm sure the new object of Razz's wrath) Kyle Chipchura. Habs shouldn't hang their heads, they certainly improved from last year, and there's no reason to think they'll take a step back.

The problem is that next year is the last kick at the can for the current group. 4 of the KO's will be unrestricted in 2009: Komisarek, Kovalev, Koivu, and Kostopolous. Plus the last of the killer B's: Bouillon and Begin. Plekanec and Higgins will be RFA's, one year away from unrestricted free agency.

The window is closing fast.

We can't afford Liles. We need to save every bit of cap space for what we have.

This team is being built around Price, Markov, Hamrlik and Komisarek on the back end, and Plekanec and the Kostitsyns up front going forward. Kovalev and Koivu will be re-evaluated next summer, along with Higgins, who we need to replace on the top lines and turn into a 3rd liner. It's time for Latendresse to get a scoring role on this team and Higgins has proven this post-season that he can't be a reliable front line player.

Next year's the centennial but hopefully Gainey doesn't do something stupid and hand out a ridiculous contract this summer to "build" off of this year's success.

You thought you shouldn't have to bother with the formality of four more games against us. So... not much...

This is why we don't need no J-M Liles:

Impressive!

Nigel Williams happens to be on that team as well. Smile Not really relevant, I just wanted to point that out.

What's great is that they're playing Kitchener in the OHL Final (and both teams will be at the Memorial Cup since it's in Kitchener), and Kitchener's top offensive defenseman is a Montreal pick as well, Yannick Weber (another Swiss puckmover). But Subban's awesome from all reports, and he picks up his production in the playoffs, unlike our current offensive defensemen (well, besides Brisebois). Laughing Mad

Max Paccioretty could very well be turning pro this year as well after a hugely successful rookie campaign in the NCAA. He's definitely physically ready for pros, but I'd fully expect him to take a year in Hamilton before making a run at the show.

I have no idea if Pavel Valentenko or Mathieu Carle are ready for the jump yet. Not getting any callups this year has kind of put them in an unfortunate spot.

Like I said, I want Guillaume to be on a scoring line next year. He's improved his physical play as well as his skating, and we need to put his big ass to work.

I don't know if Chips has improved his skating or faceoff abilities to join the team full time again. I hope so, because I want to get a third line of Higgins-Chips-Lapierre going at some point next year. Of course, to start the year, we'll probably need to keep Lapierre at centre.

We will get a bit of a head start on rebuilding our forward corps in Hamilton next year... I don't expect D'Agostini to make the grade next fall, and neither for Stewart. Chipchura is the only one I'm holding out hope for. If Grabovski returns (he might jump ship to Russia) then he might help make for a fairly dynamic 3rd line.

Open spots: one regular forward spot (C/RW), one D.

Projection:
Latendresse - Koivu - Kovalev
A Kostitsyn - Plekanec - S Kostitsyn
Higgins - Grabovski - Lapierre/Dandenault
Begin - Chipchura/Lapierre - Greek

(top callups: D'Agostini, Stewart, Paccioretty, Maxwell, White, Trotter)

Markov - Komisarek
Hamrlik - O'Byrne
Bouillon - Gorges

(top callups: Valentenko, Carle, Subban?, Emelin)

Price
Halak

We'll also need to get a new 3rd goalie. Apparently the Habs are the next team on Fabio's tour, but if that kid doesn't sign with Detroit I question his intelligence.

I don't know if Emelin or Perezhogin are realistic options for next season or not.

Dude, stop talking about next year. We still plenty of hockey left...possibly. I think we'll win. I'm more confident we'll win game 5 at least.

Man, even if we pull off the comeback we're toast vs. the Pens. Spending 14 games to go through the first 2 rounds is like playing an extra round.

Our chances of winning the Cup evaporated in Philly this week.

If we don't win game 5, I'll mail Razz a piece of my own shit for his dining pleasure.

Sooo confused on how to cheer.... Very Happy

Yeah, I think it's a bit early to dissect the team for next year. This is the playoffs - teams face elimination. Great ones come back. Like E.L., I have a good feeling for game 5.. granted, I also had a good feeling for games 2 through 4, Laughing

They need to pull a page from Boston and Philly and start interfering with Biron - take him off his game. Do everything short of pulling an Avery/Shanahan.
