Scott Mellanby now a Canuck.
is Mike Keenan still GM? seriously though, I like the move caz I like Mellanby (as a player , dont know shit all about his management abilities) but most importantly he can be a great recruiter. I would be stunned if Pavol Demitra isnt a Canuck this summer. |

According to some guy on HFBoards, the Slovak press is continuing to report Demitra's desire to play in Vancouver next year. How that would tie into Mellanby is beyond me, though.
Mellanby has a bit of a dry wit -- I remember that from the skills competition this season. Beyond that, I am totally ambivalent about the move. _________________

| yeah , I felt Vancouver was a favourite for Pavol's destinations anyways with Gillis alone. Mellanby to me pushes it over the top , being former teammates for 3+ years ... hence I would be stunned if Pavol isnt a Canuck |

interesting point brought up by many.... wouldnt have this job been for trevor Linden?
I dont mind actually, if I was boss of whatever I would want my guys working for me , I wouldny feel comfortable or happy if I was forced into hiring poeple over my own people. Its not a knock on Linden of course , Gillis feels more comfortable with Mellanby |

Ben Kuzma answered the question on Linden .... he hasnt retired yet lol.. like most , I already have Linden retired and working in the front office already. There is a chance Linden might come back if AV is replaced and Gillis invites him back according to Kuzma
Plus Kuzma brought up that Mellanby will be the eastern rep , he will still live in St.Louis but will do pro scouting and such out there. The guy he might be replacing is Lorne Henning. Just replace the guy who gave Nonis the thumbs up to give Chouinard a 2 year contract |

INteresting I was reading and heard Mellanby confirm that he and Gillis didnt really know each other before last week. So it wasnt a buddy hiring or former client hiring BUT I read that Gillis turned to ...you guessed it Pavol Demitra along with Holik and Pavel Bure for recommending Mellanby as a consultant/aide.
Got me to thinking , the Canucks only have 2 european scouts... am I the only one who would love to see Pavel Bure come back to the Canucks as a russian scout. He can stay there as the mob boss or whatever he does but helps scout/recruit russians. |

If Gillis is talking to Demitra or Holik, then the NHL should be on top of that and ding him and the Canucks with tampering charges. _________________ "Oh my God. There she is. Lovely Sally Slater. If Gillis only asked him what he thought of Scott Mellanby, he hasn't done anything wrong. That said, I would be floored if some sort of nudge-nudge-wink-wink discussion wouldn't have happened at the same time. _________________

I'm pretty sure asking him about a potential hire without first seeking permission from the Wild to do so would be tampering. _________________ "Oh my God. There she is. Lovely Sally Slater. | in reference to the nudge nudge wink wink tampering under the table.. Tony Ghallager commented on this years ago and I totally agree with him that tampering has been going on for decades. They want me to believe that player A and team B worked out a 5 year multi million dollar contract in one day? in reference to guys signing UFA deals on JUly 1 |

| Heard something on 1040 about Gillis being a Goodenow man, and Linden... not so much... I think Linden's days in the organization are done... |

| makes sense , Goodenow got the NHLPA their best deal which meant big money for Gillis. Not saying Gillis holds a grudge against linden but I assume Gillis wouldnt had liked the deal Linden cut ( salary cap). |

Well, you could look at it both ways... Linden got the players back playing, which meant that they and their agents also got paid sooner so...
Gillis might have been a friend to Goodenow, but that doesn't mean he would necessarily hold a grudge against Linden over it; the PA under Goodenow was at an impasse with Bettman and the owners - by brokering a deal to get the players back playing, one could argue that Linden helped put food on Gillis' table sooner... _________________ ... Iain MacIntyre has picked up on this too:

Linden loves Vancouver, too. But the not-yet-officially-retired Canuck was never going to work for Gillis, a long-time ally and friend of former Players' Association boss Bob Goodenow, whose overthrow was orchestrated by Linden in 2005. Gillis pushed the inquiry into the Linden-Ted Saskin revolt, so a Linden-Gillis partnership was never going to work for either man.
Mellanby, hired this week as a consultant to Gillis, is a respected, well-liked 20-year veteran who should become an asset to the Canucks' management team. But you wonder what might have been for Linden were Nonis still in charge.

Wasn't Scott Mellanby one of those Mike Keenan plumber-types that always seemed to follow him no matter which team Keenan ended up on? _________________ ... Because the old one, is well, old.

Not really. He was a core player on Florida's cinderalla team, and only really a pure grit player later in his career.
Keenan's trio of faves were Peter Zezel, Brian Noonan, and Stephan Matteau. |
