Holy shit... this is really terrible.
I kid you not, just this past weekend I was talking to a female hockey player named 'Bourdon' who had never heard of him, and I expressed surprise at that. What a horrible way for her to have her first exposure... _________________

Oh my god... What a tragic end to what may have been a promising career. My heart goes out to his family and friends... _________________ ... Because the old one, is well, old.

Vancouver Canucks Statement on the Passing of Luc Bourdon
May 29, 2008. 12:16 PM PDT
Vancouver, B.C. – It is with deep regret that the Vancouver Canucks today announced defenceman Luc Bourdon passed away in a motor vehicle accident on Thursday morning. Bourdon was 21 years old.
“We are deeply saddened by today’s news and on behalf of the entire Vancouver Canucks organization, I would like to extend my sincere sympathies to Luc’s family,” said Canucks General Manager, Mike Gillis. “Luc was an extremely talented player with a bright future. He brought great passion to the game and was a valued team member on and off the ice. He will be greatly missed.” |

Tragic and way too young. I read there was a second victim? , thoughts to that person's family too. Everytime I see Ross Gellar on the tv show Friends , I will see Luc Bourdon...
this is dejavu for me , 3 years ago my former beer league teammate and friend bought a motorcycle for his 21st or 22nd birthday , roughly the same age... he went cruising that day ( on his birthday) and hit a turn too fast , crashed into some parked cars and died. Just kids.
Sometimes it takes tragedy to smack us in the face and get a grip on reality and the important things. Hopefully Canucks fans whom were getting seriously stressed out or upset over the Canucks , can remind themselves to enjoy real life more. |

| Today is also the 18th anniversary of my brother dying of cancer at age 26 years. My parents suffered many years over his passing. I can only image how Luc's parents and family are feeling right now, being a father of a 23 year old. Hockey doesn't mean a rat's ass right now. RIP Luc. |

It's hit me a fair bit harder since I got home from work and have actually seen some of the TSN coverage and what not... I'll admit to being pretty shaken.
RDS has some teammate reaction that I haven't seen in the English press (I'll translate below):
| RDS wrote: |
"He was a really great guy that I had the chance to get to know this year, and he was an excellent teammate," commented the Canucks' goalie Roberto Luongo.
"He liked joking around to make his teammates laugh. He had really progressed well last season and he had the talent to see a great career in the NHL," Luongo added.
It was from the Canuck goaltender that his coach, Alain Vigneault, learned the sad news.
"When Roberto called me, I immediately thought of his family and his close friends," confided Vigneault. "He had his whole life in front of him with enormous talent. There's no doubt in my mind that he would have had a regular spot in the NHL very soon."
"You never know how to react in these situations, but our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and all his former teammates. We hope that all together can overcome this trial," Vigneault said. _________________

I suppose it would be a bit insensitive to comment on the Canucks' prospect depth right about now
Seriously though... RIP Luc. No doubt he was just out having a good time and the bike got away from him. It's a dangerous, but perfectly legal high, and many of us have friends who absolutely love riding, or do it themselves. By all accounts he was a quality young man... can't even begin to imagine what his family must feel like...

Precisely what a lot of us must have wondered about:
| Jason Botchford wrote: |
Sobbing uncontrollably just hours after losing her son, Luc Bourdon, in a tragic motorcycle accident, Suzanne Boucher said she had tried desperately to stop him from buying a bike.
Her plea worked last year when her fears changed his mind. That's when Bourdon, the promising Canucks defenceman, first told his mom he dreamed of riding, and was spellbound by the "power and beauty" of motorcycles.
"I was scared when he told me that," Boucher said yesterday through tears from her home in Shippagan, N.B. "I disagreed with it so much. I said, 'You can't do it.' It was too risky, too dangerous. His girlfriend helped me reason with him. But this year was different. This year he wasn't going to listen.
"He said, 'Mom, I can die in a plane, I can die in a car, I can die walking out onto the street. I don't want to live in fear. I want to enjoy life to the fullest. Don't worry, Mom, I'll be safe. I won't be crazy.'" |
