How long can the Boots/Samueli loving head office keep Jim Balsillie down?
| Quote: |
Of the eight ownership groups who engaged in talks and negotiations with Mr. Balsillie, several represent NHL teams in the southern United States, including the Atlanta Thrashers, Carolina Hurricanes, Tampa Bay Lightning and Dallas Stars. An offer was tabled by Mr. Balsillie for the Buffalo Sabres last December but was scuttled when he insisted on moving the team to Southwestern Ontario.
Other discussions involved partners in groups that own teams, for example, the Edmonton Oilers, where one of the 34 partners had expressed an interest in selling his stake to Mr. Balsillie. |

He should just get someone to launch a couple of lawsuits for fraud and he's in. Why not just partner up with Bruce McNall? _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

The problem with guys like Jim Balsillie and Jerry Bruckheimer owning NHL teams is that they actually have money. Heaven forbid revenues go higher and the players earn another cent.
I'm surprised the Daryl Katz sale went through. He's an especially bad choice for the NHL because he's actually a hockey fan. Maybe Katz has a nickname like "Clamps" and tricked the other owners into thinking he was one of them. _________________ It seems like you need to be a physics professor to choose the right TV. I'm sure the guy that wanted to sell his stake in the Oilers to Jim was doing so to get him "in the club" and see if he could parlay that influence into eventually buying a struggling team and moving them, or getting an expansion franchise in Eastern Canada.
We'll see. Apparently the Leafs were blocking him moving into Southern Ontario, and he's shown interest in Quebec City and spoke glowingly of the hockey tradition and fans up there, saying they only need an arena. He has the finances to build one there so rather than face off against both the NHL and MLSE, he may just chose to battle one foe and try for a team in Quebec, which no one objects to in principle. _________________ "Oh my God. The NHL won't want them in because the second they come in and see what's going on, they'll say "Wait a minute, you're saying that the more money my team makes, the more money I'll be paying to that idiot across from me who was dumb enough to buy the rights to put a team in market x, isn't marketing worth a shit, and is content to sit with their thumbs up their asses losing my money? You claim that this is a business, not a fucking handout program. Why the hell are these teams allowed to continue operating? F that noise." _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

Daly fights back.
| Quote: |
"That certainly is inconsistent with anything I have ever heard the commissioner say," Daly told TSN on Wednesday.
"Ultimately, Mr. Balsillie's ability to be an owner in the NHL will depend on his ability to find an existing owner who wants to sell him a team, and his ability to persuade the 29 other team owners - his prospective partners - that he would be a good owner and good partner in the league venture. That's not something the Commissioner decides. Maybe Mr. Rodier would be better off confining his comments to subject matters as to which he might have some small level of knowledge; this subject isn't one of them." |
Balsillie and his minions need to lay low in this case. Put some feelers out and quickly reach a deal with an individual owner. If you strong arm the league by getting an owner to agree to a sale, Bettman will have no choice but to show his true colours and attempt to reject a perfectly legal sale. _________________ It seems like you need to be a physics professor to choose the right TV. My guess is the big problem with Balsillie is the NHL now knows where he wants to put a team and clearly believes once he gets his hands on one they can't stop him from doing it. Given the NHL efforts to keep him out I wonder if they think he does have a leg to stand on. _________________ It's not you Sundin, it's me...please just leave...and don't look back....please please do not look back. |

Stability is important, and I give Bettman credit for being committed to the 30 franchises of the league. Remember that Edmonton and Ottawa were one foot out the door and he gave both cities the time to find owners despite their dire predicaments.
In the case with Jim Balsillie though, the NHL could use an infusion of new owners who are better equipped to deal with the post-lockout league. The way the league is structured, revenues will keep climbing and at some point the have-not franchises will finally reach their tipping points.
If Tampa can't secure a real owner (Oren Koules has neither the capital nor the wherewithal to be more than a temporary solution), they'll be out in five years. It's a shame because with competent owners they should at least be a decent 'small' market team.
The Sabres are in trouble long-term because the city of Buffalo itself might not be able to support professional sports for much longer.
Atlanta is a bad sports town and the Thrashers are in no worse shape than the Hawks (likely better). The Atlanta Spirit group will resolve their legal issues, at which point the team will be put up for sale.
The Predators deserve a chance with new owners. The Nashville situation isn't that hopeless. In three years we'll know if they can make it.
The Coyotes and Panthers are locked into iron clad arena leases and both depend on having the teams for arena-area real-estate development. They probably won't go anywhere, but they'll languish because their owners won't bother putting money into these franchises.
Not sure what to make of the Hurricanes. They'll always be small market, so I'm not sure the grass will be greener elsewhere.
Islanders need a new barn.
Capitals will stay, but without Leonsis they would be on the chopping block. _________________ It seems like you need to be a physics professor to choose the right TV. Luckily, I am one.

So Boots knows the banks are on to him, so he gives Jim Balsillie a call and tries to sell him his share of the Preds. Gary Bettman steps in and tells the poor and soon to be accused Boots to not sell his share to Balsillie.
That about sums up the Gary Bettman era. _________________ It seems like you need to be a physics professor to choose the right TV. Luckily, I am one.
