Quote:
Tom Meldrum coached Babcock for four seasons - first in bantam hockey and later with the midget AAA Contacts.

"You had to make very sure, when you were doing a new drill," said Meldrum, "that you were able to explain it to him because if he didn't understand it, he'd be at your door after practice, wanting to know what you were trying to prove.

"He wanted to know right down to the last detail why we were doing that. He was trying to learn something."

...

Babcock bit off a bigger battle in 1981 when he was a budding defenceman with the Saskatoon Blades.

"I had to call off a practice to save his life," recalled former Blades coach Daryl Lubiniecki. "He'd had a fight with (future NHL enforcer) Dave Brown in practice and he actually cut Dave Brown. You know what Dave is like; the next time they were on the ice together, Dave went right at him. Both benches cleared - not for a bench-clearing brawl, but they came out to watch the fight."

Brown stood four inches taller than the 6-foot-1 Babcock, and Lubiniecki quickly interrupted the mismatch.

"I don't know if he's ever thanked me for saving his life," Lubiniecki said wryly.

...

Few of hockey's major championships have eluded Babcock. In addition to collegiate titles and the Stanley Cup, he's the only coach to guide Canada to world championships at both the junior (1997) and senior (2004) levels.

The author of that resume is quick to put it in perspective, though.

"The measure of me, in my lifetime," said Babcock, "isn't going to be how many games or Stanley Cups I win. It's going to be the family I raise and the amount of integrity I (have) in my life.

"Those," he concluded, "are Saskatchewan things."

According to Bob McCown, Saskatchewan is also the 'greatest hockey province' in terms of NHL players produced per capita.

Babcock is the man. After his work in Anaheim I was a little wary of what he might do with Detroit, but he's been amazing. This is the last year of his deal and they'll have another one done soon.

There is now no reason why he shouldn't be the Head Coach for Canada in Vancouver.

He's the best communicator in the biz. I don't think there's ever been a single player on one of his teams since coming to the NHL that didn't know what was expected of him. He challenges players, but he doesn't try and turn them into something they aren't (hello Hitchcock). And most of all, he gets results.

The fact that Hasek didn't cause a single locker room issue also speaks volumes to both the staff and the leadership group of the Wings.

Yup, he should be. If Yzerman is GM, there may be some sense of loyalty to Gretz, but Babs should be the clear choice.

He had a hilarious quote about the goalie switch in round 1: "If you're changing your starting goalie in game 4 of the first round, you're probably going fishing in 3 days" Laughing Not the exact wording, but something to that effect.

Helm for Hartigan worked out as well. Helm played well in his limited role.

Sitting Chelios in the Finals would have been a tough call. But its about results and accountability. They were winning, and he didn't want to mess with that.

I really thought they would've brought Chelios in for Game 6. Obviously, he had a lot more confidence in the group that dominated Game 5 but lost.... but with it being a triple OT game and you have an inspirational guy like Chelios sitting out... it seemed like a Danyeko type situation in 2003 when Burns had him sit out until Game 7 with Tverdovsky playing instead. I guess if it had gone 7, it was one last trick up his sleeve...

I thought he would have put him in too, but Babs seems to know what he's doing...
