I’m no psychologist, or even a sociologist, but I also think this trend tells us a little bit about the country’s psyche.
I believe that in uncertain times, which would describe our economy right now, people get a certain comfort from the familiar. And there’s nothing more familiar than vegging out and watching sports, even if it’s not a sport you usually follow.
It reminds you of years ago, when there were only 30 channels instead of 300 (or three channels, if you grew up pre-cable). Back then, you probably watched hockey even if you didn’t like it, simply because there was nothing else on. |
Or... because of the uncertain economy, people are choosing to sit in front of the TV for inexpensive entertainment, and hockey is what some people are choosing.... because they don't have a lot of disposable income right now. _________________ "Oh my God. There she is. Lovely Sally Slater. I should speak to her. But what the hell can I say? Anything that doesn't mention that I masturbate over her memory is probably a good idea."

Hmmm... I was actually going to cancel my CI subscription for next year; I'd rather put the $140 towards a better TV and re-upping my XBL account. _________________ ... Because the old one, is well, old.
