The Detroit Red Wings have signed Babcock to a three-year contract extension. They were scheduled to make the announcement at a news conference this morning at Joe Louis Arena. The sides had agreed in principle to a deal months ago but needed to finalize some minor details and get it in writing, which they did following the team's Stanley Cup championship last week.

A source told Booth Newspapers the pact is worth $1.5 million a season and is loaded with bonuses, making Babcock one of the highest-paid coaches in the league.

The Red Wings hired the fiery, demanding Babcock in 2005 to get the most out of a team that had underachieved in the playoffs the previous two seasons. Babcock gradually made the Red Wings a harder team to play against. While maintaining their puck-possession style, they became a club that forechecks more aggressively, with players not hesitant to venture into high-traffic areas in the corners and around the net. Forwards are also required to back-check harder.

"We got great players, and we played hard all year," Babcock said last week, following the Game 6 victory over Pittsburgh in the Stanley Cup finals. "For over three years we've been a pretty good hockey club. And with the leadership of (Nicklas) Lidstrom and (Henrik) Zetterberg, (Pavel) Datsyuk, (Kris) Draper, (Chris) Chelios, it's a pretty special group."

Babcock, 45, has compiled a record of 162-56-28 in three seasons with Detroit, winning the Presidents' Trophy twice (2005-06 and this past season) and finishing tied for the best record in the league the other season. He is the only coach to lead the Red Wings to consecutive 50-win seasons. If he wins 50 next season, he'll join former Detroit coach Scotty Bowman as the only coach to record four straight 50-win seasons (Bowman did it with Montreal from 1975-76 to 1978-79).

Great Very Happy He's had an amazing record in his first 3 years here, and won a Cup in his third year.

Supposedly the reason it's 3 years is because that's how many years Kenny has left on his deal, and he doesn't want to sign a coach for longer than his own deal.
