Makes sense. A guy like Malone is the precise player to clean up in the new cap world. 6 Years/30M is not out of the question.

Plus he still gets to be a native son of the rust belt. I like it.

Except I don't think he'll do nearly as well as in Pittsburgh.

Seeing as how he'll be going from a team that had a center corps consisting of Crosby, Malkin, and Staal, and going to a team who uses Jiri Novotny as a scoring center, yeah, I think he'll have a bit harder go of it in Columbus. Laughing

In short, Malone will not negotiate with Columbus if he is traded there. He's sitting until July 1.

It's kind of dumb to make an declaration like that. If someone offers him a 25 year contract sign-and-trade worth $9.8 billion, is he really going to say no?

Before Malone got cold feet, my sources indicate Columbus had a official offer on the table that would have sent their 2nd round pick to Pittsburgh in exchange for the rights to Ryan Malone. A roster player from Columbus was also involved according to a source. As the day went on the Malone camp so how many teams are going to be interested in him on July 1st and they have the made the smart decision for his sake to test the UFA waters. Columbus was willing to offer a 5yr deal worth 25-27 million but Malone is eyeing Phoenix, Minnesota and Vancouver as his top three choices in free agency. According to a source, Columbus is no longer a potential suitor for Malone on July 1. This is a significant blow for the Penguins who have made it known they are looking to move back into the 1st or 2nd round.

If true, I'm glad there's some interest in Vancouver. I feel he's one of those guys who would either thrive with the Sedins or do very little.
