This'll probably be me talking to myself again, much like the gameday threads Razz

Salary Cap info

Print Screen!

Let the good times roll for one more season with Zetterberg and Franzen. Supposedly Kenny was trying to negotiate an even longer deal for Franzen on his last one, but he didn't bite. Shocked

Statuses:
UFA
McCarty - 2-way offer on the table.
Hartigan - KHL
Drake -Retired 07/15/2008

Old balls - says he'll be back. Holland wants him as 7th or 8th, they're gonna have a talk soon. Deal pretty much worked out, details left

RFA
Quincey - qualified, Out of AHL options, like Meech. We'll see what happens with Chelly/Stuey/Lilja.

Other:
Helm - still has to earn a spot on the team in training camp. I'm still not sure if Detroit will keep him up for 10 minutes a night, or keep him in GR playing 20.
Abbadabbadoo: Grand Rapids, unless he really impresses in training camp. Babs liked what he brought in his brief stint at the end of the season. Me too.
Ville Leino - huge wild card. On a one year deal.
Johan Ryno - started off well last season with Grand Rapids but went home for family reasons(I think) and struggled in Sweden. Hopefully he'll be back in camp this year and in Grand Rapids. Huge body with skill, and Detroit doesn't get a lot of those.

Marian Hossa has been brought in for one year @ 7.45 mil
Voltron - Resigned with Detroit for 5 years at 3 per year
Stuey -Resigned with Detroit for 4 years at $3.75 per year
Lilja - Resigned with Detroit for 2 years at $1.25 per year
Ericsson - Resigned for 3 years, 900k hit per year cap hit. Still has a year of waiver-exemption
Howard - Resigned for 3 years at $716,666.67 per year cap hit. Still has a year of waiver-exemption
Ty Conklin has been brought in for one year @ 750k.
Steve Downey - Resigned for 1 year, 2-way deal
Darren Haydar - signed for 1 year, 2-way at $525,000 NHL salary
Ryan Oulahen - signed for 1 year.

[i]Brad McCrimmon brought in as the new assistant coach

Oh yeah another guy who was qualified was Ryan Oulahen. He's finished his third season with Grand Rapids. I'm not sure where he fits in with the team's plans. I think the waiver-rule is after 3 pro seasons or a certain amount of pro games, then you have to clear waivers to go to the minors. If that's the case, maybe Hartigan is let go and he's up in Detroit...

July 1st:
Stuey brought back for 4 years at $3.75 per.
Lilja brought back for 2 years at $1.25 per.
Conkblock brought in for 1 year at 750k

Will post the new salary Cap situation soon. Detroit currently sits at $45.273 in payroll, so about $11.4 million in room, which excludes qualifying offers to Oulahen, Quincey, Howard and Ericsson. Filppula also needs a contract.

Wings take it easy as free agency starts

I have no problem at all with Kenny's moves. I would love to be able to see one of the kids on D get into a role, but I understand the reason for bringing back Lilja. If someone beats him or Lebda out in camp, Kenny can make a move accordingly.

Some depth forwards will be needed. Helm and Ritola are among the 12(13 including Filppula) forwards signed right now, and I don't think Ritola will be with the team next year. Helm may not even be. McCarty has a one year offer to ponder and I think he'll be back. Perhaps one more guy and some depth in GR. Who knows, maybe they keep using Meech at forward. However, Detroit has some room to add a pretty good one-year forward. Supposedly they've offered Hossa a deal similar to Datsyuk's, but he has some large offers coming in from elsewhere. Hossa would cloud the long-term picture, and barring the cap continuing to rise by significant amounts, Detroit would continue to goaltend on the cheap.

Contracts are still needed for Howard, Filppula, Oulahen and Ericsson sometime. All have QOs on the table. Zetterberg and Franzen for next season as well.

Between winning the Stanley Cup, finding out that Toronto will be the opening night opponent for the Cup Banner raising ceremony and now signing Stuart and Hossa. I do believe, that taking this all together, that this will put a grin on my face that will be hard to remove all summer long. Very Happy

The Detroit News wrote:
For openers ... The NHL schedule will be released in mid-July, and changes still can be made, but the Maple Leafs and Wings are expected to begin the regular season at Joe Louis Arena on a "Hockey Night in Canada"/Versus spectacular.

The NHL wants to make its start of the regular season an event similar to how the NFL opens its season with a special Thursday night telecast.

What about the European games next year? I assume those will happen before that game does.

I don't know. We'll have to wait for the schedule to come out to see what transpires with that.

Split off the Hossa discussion.

Filppula elects arbitration, which means he will be a Wing next year. Hopefully Kenny gets him to sign on the dotted line as he always does with looming arbitration cases.

Dallas Drake retires

What turned out to be a quality move by Holland to bring him in for last season and give him his first Cup.

It was a lot of fun watching his career over the years. He was a great competitor no matter who he was playing with. He always had my respect and I still don't like the trade that sent him to Winnipeg for Essensa. But, bringing him back to win the Cup last year was a great move.

http://blog.mlive.com/snapshots/2008/07/wings_expect_to_sign_filppula.html

Filppula:
Quote:
At this point it's still assumed that the Red Wings will re-sign Valtteri Filppula to either a two-year or long-term deal before Filppula and his agent, Bill Zito, are scheduled to face off vs. Detroit GM Ken Holland in Toronto on August 1st, as the Windsor Star's Dave Waddell notes:

Quote:
July 16, Windsor Star: While the two sides know the shorter offer will relatively easy to conclude, Holland and Filppula's agent Bill Zito are trying to nail down a longer deal.

The Wings are looking at the $1.5-2 million range for Filppula. I'm sure that Zito is looking at the kinds of $2.5 million-plus contracts doled out to 40-point-scorers during early July as comparables, but the Wings don't feel that Filppula's established himself just yet.

Chelios:
Quote:
As for Chelios, Holland said it'll be just a matter of connecting with the veteran defenceman this week to tidy up the details.
"He wants to come back and I told him we have a spot for him," Holland said. "We both both know the ballpark we're in salary wise."
...
Because this is a "possible last year of the CBA" in the NHL's eyes (the PA has the option to re-open the CBA after this season, which is unlikely to happen at this point), Holland can't give Chelios the usual over-35 player bonuses that can be counted against the following season's cap, so he might have to agree to a deal closer to the league minimum than he'd like to sign.

McCarty and Downey have been offered 2-way deals:
Quote:
Darren McCarty and Aaron Donwey, however, are assessing their market values. Holland's offered both players two-way contracts, so both players are attempting to determine whether they can get the security of an NHL-only deal elsewhere:

Wings, Ericsson close on a 3 year deal

Quote:
The Detroit Red Wings are close to signing defenseman Jonathan Ericsson to a three-year contract, according to Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet.

The deal reportedly will average $900,000 a season ($550,000 next season, $900,000 in 2009-10 and $1.25 million in 2010-11). It will be a two-way contract, meaning Ericsson will receive a lower salary and won't count against the salary cap if he's assigned to Grand Rapids (AHL).

With his combination of size (6-5, 225) and skills, Ericsson, 24, is widely regarded as the top prospect in the Red Wings' system. After two seasons with the Griffins, he appears ready to make the jump to the NHL. But because Ericsson is the only player among their 10 defensemen who can be sent to the minors without going through waivers, he is likely to begin the season in Grand Rapids, barring a rash of injuries.

Well, nhlnumbers has the deal on there with the 900k cap hit...

Howard's listed on NHLPA as signed for 600k

Three-year deal

Figures:

Quote:
Howard's signed a more modest deal ($600,000 for 08-09, $750,000 for 09-10, and $800,000 for 10-11, or an average cap hit of $716,666.67 per season

Updated cap picture above. It's a little weird though. It counts Ericsson's deal, but he could still be in GR to start the season, while it doesn't count Meech, who will likely start the year in Detroit because he isn't waiver-exempt.

Howard also has another year of waiver exemption, so his deal is similar to Ericsson's... both will likely go to Grand Rapids this year, but with the idea of playing for the Wings full time in 2009-10.

Voltron signed for 5 years, $15 million

Without Helm, Haydar, Ritola and Howard against the cap, with Ericsson instead of Meech counted(which will probably be the other way around), the Wings are now down to about .6 million in cap space, with McCarty(and Downey I think) offered 2-way contracts. Quincey has a qualifying offer outstanding.

Chelios is unsigned.

With Ericsson in the minors and Meech up with the club, that will bring the cap space close to a mil.

I won't be surprised to see some trades around camp or after the pre-season...

The qualifying offer with Quincey has expired (they all expire on July 15). He's obviously looking for a different contract offer than that one.

Chelios status, and Holland expects to make some moves before the season starts:

Quote:
This signing pushes the Wings right up against the cap. They are less than $1 million under the $56.7 million cap, and they still need to sign defensemen Kyle Quincey and Chris Chelios. With Chelios, it was just a case of seeing how much money they had available after signing Filppula.

Holland said they will likely head into camp over the cap, forcing them to trade somebody. He said they'll let it play out in camp and the exhibition games and then make a decision. They don't have to be under the cap until Oct. 8, the day before the season. They have 10 defensemen, only one of whom (Jonathan Ericsson) is exempt from waivers, so they'll likely need to move somebody on defense.

"We'll have to make a decision based on the 23-man roster, the salary cap and age,'' Holland said. "We'll have to be prepared to trade some players. I would expect there would be interest in some of our players.''

However, there's no guarantee as to what role he'll have with the team:

Quote:
With Valtteri Filppula's deal done, Wings GM Ken Holland will look to finish off Chris Chelios's contract.
Chelios had basically agreed to take what Detroit could afford to pay him once the key players were taken care of this summer.
"Chris and I had talk and he knew what we could pay him would depend on if we were able to do anything major this summer," Holland said. "Getting Marian Hossa unexpectedly and signing Filppula long term means there's going to be less.
"He understood that. He also understands his role.
"If Mike Babcock feels the best chance of winning on nightly basis is with one of the kids over Chelly, that's what he's going to do."
