Just in time for the UFA trade/sign/steal frenzy!

Vancouver's goalies: http://www.canada.com/theprovince/news/sports/story.html?id=ba672e90-4342-4eb5-8399-f2fbd6c16396

Assuming that they don't re-sign Sanford (UFA) or MacIntyre (UFA), they'll need a backup for Luongo and another for Schneider in the Moose. And one of those could very well be an old friend.

Wow. We claimed Wellwood. Great job making impact moves, GMMG. Mad

EDIT: Well, he's an upgrade on Byron Ritchie, Ryan Shannon and Rick Rypien, I'll grant you that, but his footspeed and lack of defensive consciousness is going to land him in the doghouse. And he's softer than the Sedins if I recall...

It's a good day for Fast Food vendors in Vancouver!!

Though...

Maybe he will be like those people who when they get dumped by someone they channel the pain to revenge and devote themselves to making the ex regret that decision.

Wellwood -- many figured they might make a play for him if he was still available to them, but given that he was once a rather hyped prospect, rumblings were that someone else would likely claim him. I don't know what kind of coin he's going to get, but if it's anything substantial I'd rather have held onto Morrison. I could see Wellwood finding Viño's doghouse pretty quickly.

Does he play wing at all? Is it possible he's the new Anson Carter? If his one asset is his hands, he's a cheap solution to being the Triplet.

I don't know why there'd be no effort to bring back Sanford -- I'm still not entirely sure what Canuck fans (and, apparently, management) expect of backup goalies, that they keep feeling the need to search out a better one.

That said, I'd be fine with Auld if he returned -- it would make the picture of Wellwood crashing into him on that article all the funnier.

He did briefly alongside Sundin and Ponikarovsky...didn't seem to work. What little I saw of that line showed me that Welly isn't necessarily willing to do the work down low along the boards, which forced Mats to do so, which of course defeated the whole purpose of putting Welly out there to be a setup man for Sundin.

Very disappointed in Wellwood. He should know that he's not big and not fast and therefore better damn well stay in prime condition to be an impact player in the NHL.

Why do I have the feeling he's going to be the next Harold Druken and find himself tossed back and forth between these two teams?

He's played Wing before. He won't be an Anson Carter though. He could get you more goals than Hank Sedin, but his assets are his passing and vision, not his goal-scoring.

I think there's going to be a glut of backup goalie possibilities out there, and perhaps GMMG wants to offer the job to Drew MacIntyre instead. Both are UFAs. Perhaps Ian Clark has seen something in Sanford's game that suggests that he's peaked as far as his development goes.

Well, he was all those things, until Toronto decided to give him away for nothing. Now the black-hearted hockey fates have decreed he is Steve Sullivan MK II. Congrats Van. Mad

So do I but until someone proves to me that this is Bizarro world, then your opinion of Wellwood is the one that I will expect... Mad
