I hear nothing but disparaging things in the blogosphere about this Softwood cat. Is this a good signing at that price?

Sure, if AV can get him down to playing weight, he has some ability...

He's slow, soft, doesn't get involved defensively which helps him rack up 0 PIMs a year. Good passer, decent faceoff guy, but as has been said many times.... horrid conditioning.

So, as you can see... future captain material.

Think Steve Sullivan!

He was nabbed off the waiver wire too back in the day!

Surprised

Surprised

He had speed and heart to go with his talent. The two aren't comparable.

the dude has career 14 PIMS in 189 career games , ZERO pims in the last 107 games. There's a difference between being disciplined and being a lazy pussy fuck.... from all the criticisim Im pretty sure I know which one he is.

Wellwood was waived today.I don't think playing him on the fourth line for one game was much of a chance(esp when the whole team pulled a no show) ...but whatever

The thing is, they could actually really use him when injuries hit. People keep harping on scoring depth (I honestly don't see how the Canucks are so much shallower than the average NHL team in a day and age where team scoring leaders sometimes get 50 points, but whatever), and he would absolutely help the power play.

I imagine he will likely clear, though I could see a minor risk of re-entries.

Any rules preventing the Leafs from taking him on re-entry?

That would be funny...still don't want his lazy ass on my team, but even a small victory like getting him back at half the cost would be something for us suckers in Leaf land.

Something had to give; Nycholat was back off the IR, and BXA is about to return so they would have been over the 23-player max... Brown would have been claimed, and they'd want to keep him. With the team playing better with Hordichuk in the lineup, I'm not surprised Wellwood was waived. I would expect that he'll clear and be sent to Manitoba to get ice-time and help the Moose (who I think have lost their first two games against Hamilton). Also, the chances of re-injury are higher so perhaps they are thinking they need the insurance more on d than on the forward lines.

Daniel / Henrik / Bernier
Burrows / Kesler / Hansen
MayRay / Demitra / Pyatt
Hordichuk / Johnson / Rypien
(Brown)

Ohlund / Edler
Salo / O'Brien
Mitchell / Nycholat
(Davison/BXA)

Luongo (Sanford)

Yup he is a depth forward & a potential shootout specialist but what I really don't get is the fear of losing BROWN who is a dime a dozen player.

Perhaps they feel that Brown is a better skater with more overall upside than the other dime-a-dozen players like him; hence the fear that he'd be claimed on waivers. Also, isn't he at the league minimum, whereas Wellfed's cap hit is about a million?

I think with Wellwood if you can't give him a "scorers" role with players who can finish then he can only hurt you.

they had to , as TCL mentioned

Wellwood was in the same boat as Jason King , if he aint on the scoring lines , he's useless.

I would stunned if anybody claimed him down or up . too many teams counting pennies.. unless there's a team hit insanely hard with injuries.

That's a pretty big conclusion to base on a four-game sample where in the one game Wellwood played, the team registered 10 shots and got dominated. You don't really think Hordichuk helps there, do you?

Not in a league where you spend quarter of the game on the power play, and where the individual skills competition known as the shootout is the difference between making and missing the playoffs. (There's a huge Sabermetrics/"Moneyball" problem in hockey, I think -- people vastly underestimate how much of an impact a shootout specialist can have on the standings when points are so scarce).

Anyone know where to find career shootout records?

I just don't recall him being one a specialist at it.
