Just to bring some of the team-specific discussion from the trading/signing forum in here.

Sundin was sleeping on the Vancouver offer. He's in Sweden, so he's had time to wake up, have breakfast, go shopping, catch a movie, and work on his novel, but as it's still early on the West Coast, perhaps he's being courteous and allowing Gillis to have his morning coffee before he calls up to reject the offer.

Darcy Hordichuk... seems to be relatively popular, but he doesn't have me all that excited. I mean:

Elliott Pap wrote:

"I'm excited to bring my style of play to Vancouver. I know my role. I like to be physical. I like to run around and hit guys. I like to not only protect my teammates but kind of instigate some of the guys to drop their gloves and, if they don't, then usually I'll go after their skill players."

Yaaaaay.

Kyle Wellwood accepts his qualifying offer ($997,500). Meh, that's fine with me. There is no point in playing him in anything but an offensive role, so I hope he does his part and gets in shape, and that Vigneault does his part and lets him try to score.

Ryan Johnson: apparently a shot-blocking PK specialist. Fine, I guess?

The very brief David Backes dilemma: I have no idea why the Blues (who were obviously going to match from the get-go) didn't wait the week before doing so. It handcuffs Vancouver to a certain extent. They did the Nucks a favor by acting quickly.

MacIntyre on Sundin prospects and what it says about Gillis, and "the line between drive and desperation":

Iain MacIntyre wrote:
Sundin is 37 years old - a year older than Mark Messier was when the Canucks signed him 11 years at the cusp of his decline to what became a three-year deal for $20 million US when the Canadian dollar was like the peso, only bilingual.

Gillis is close to the line. But not over. His unsuccesful bid Tuesday for restricted free agent David Backes - a three-year, $7.5-million deal almost immediately matched by the St. Louis Blues - was approaching that line, too.

Works his sack off and can fly, from what I've seen of him against Deet. Younger bro of Greg Johnson, but with absolutely no hands to speak of at the NHL level. Greg had some at least.

I like the plan of building off of teams that miss the playoffs with us! Toronto , St.Louis and Vancouver could be like the Constructacons and unite to form DEVASTATOR ( which the movie butchered btw , he's not a single tank dammit!!!) Paging Jonas Hoglund and Doug Weight!

RJ sounds like an upgrade version of Josh Green.

Hordichuk is the guy who called this team gutless. He trains with Chuck Lidell.

Dr.Frankenstein's goalie Monster is also back , in attempting to create the perfect goalie using the body parts of Curtis Joseph and Billy Ranford...the monster he calls Curtis Sandford is back!

I heard JP Berry , sounds 50/50 if Mats will come here. I wasnt sure if JP was talking about Mats in general or the Canucks offer but he did say hs gut says "Mats will play" ...either way its exciting day as the city awaits for some kind of announcement.

Personally , Im indifferent , I dont like the monster offer but I understand and appreciate why its being done.

We all knew he'd be back someday... Laughing

Vancouver signs Nolan Baumgartner to a one year, two-way contract.

TSN wrote:

Nolan Baumgartner has signed a one year, two-way deal with the Vancouver Canucks, according to his agent, Allain Roy.

"He's excited. It's a one-year deal, and he's excited to get back to Vancouver, and he's excited to have a chance again to prove he can play in the NHL," Roy told the Team 1040 in Vancouver.

Re: Sanford. I like it.

I don't know what Vancouver (incl. the fans) expects from backup goalies. Sanford was more than adequate and came cheap. It's good to have some stability in the backup role, finally. Let him develop a rapport with Luongo.

The only backup option out there that got picked up that might've made some sense I think was a guy like Lalime... maybe bringing back Auld was in the cards.

yeah , im stating the often repeated obvious but we live and die with Luongo , getting a veteran back up who could fill in if Luongo goes down is useless to this team. Sandford is more than adequate.

Well, unless Gillis somehow manages to pull something out of his ass and soon, we may not see too much more of Luongo beyond this season - GMMG has been just as unsuccessful at attracting top talent here as DN had been... And that means even less support for Luongo moving forward.

Well, GMMG targeted the wrong guy in Sundin for UFAs if that was what he was going for. Better to target Hossa or Jagr.

Näslund to the Rangers is a very sad development for me.

The flak that he took from the fans was ridiculous. Yes, he is on the decline. So what, so are a lot of players.

He's the franchise's all-time leading scorer, its only Pearson Trophy winner, and captained the team to some of its most enjoyable seasons in team history. All while arriving as a bit player and nearly getting cast off by Mike Keenan, if not for a timely injury to a teammate.

Stan Smyl had his number retired for quite a bit less. I will miss Näslund greatly and hope he has a kickass (though Cupless) final two seasons.

"Cancucks?" http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=243038&lid=headline&lpos=topStory_nhl

Mad

EDIT: Demitra = Naslund without the broody, emo angst or WCE baggage.

Still looking for that big, body presence up the middle. Mad

I like Demitra -- probably because he is a bit of a Canuck-killer. So I like the signing for the same reason I liked the Sanford signing.
