Tons of changes in Leaf land, but they aren't over yet. While guys like Blake will likely be kept around for lack of any other options, the Leafs still have some roster issues, namely on D.
Kubina and Kaberle survive the purge, with their $5m and $4.25m contracts still on the books for at least 2 more years (3 for Tomas). Added to this on the blueline are Jeff Finger ($3.5m) and Mike Van Ryn ($2.9m), so while the Leafs' blueline is cheaper, it's still not bargain basement cheap. Interesting side note on the McCabe trade, in terms of actual salary, Van Ryn makes $3.35m each of the next to years, and McCabe makes $4.15m.
Beyond that top 4, there are 4 remaining blueliners: Colaiacovo (highest paid at $1.283m), Strahlman, White, and newcomer Frogen. Another trade could be in the works, but with Colaiacovo's injury history, and Van Ryn's recent injury woes, maybe they'll hold with the current group. Still, it's hard to see a future in Toronto that includes Carlo or White, and maybe even a NHL future for either of them as well. Also mudding the mix is Steffan Kronwall, the much crappier brother of Detroit's second Nicklas.
Up front... there is a bit of a mess now that Sundin is gone, but there is some potential to fill out 2 decent scoring lines amongst Antropov, Hagman, Ponikarovsky, Steen, Stajan, Grabovski, Blake, Tlusty and the rookie Kulemin. In some fans' fatasy, the fact I named 9 players that could figure in the top 6 would mean that the Leafs have 3 potential scoring lines, but there are way too many ifs and buts for that to develop. Grinders like Mayers, Bell, Hollweg, Moore and Devereaux will round out the mix.
Fact is, now it's up to the players remaining and Wilson to determine who's still worth a damn. I could definitely see guys like Ponikarovsky dealt for picks early in the year.
It's open season up front... how do you think it'll shake out? Av, wanna try your hand at this bunch for potential line combos? _________________ "Oh my God. There she is. Lovely Sally Slater. Meh... minus the Sundin factor, I'd rather have that group going forward than what the Leafs have been icing recently.
Bell won't be a regular. Wilson has no time for him.
Grabo and Kulemin will get a chance. Maybe shitty icetime, but they'll be given a shot.
I'm thinking:
Steen - Antropov - Hagman
Ponikarovsky - Stajan - Kulemin
Blake - Grabovski - Tlusty
Hollweg - Moore - Mayers
Devereaux, Bell
Poni as trade bait. Ian White also gets dealt/waived. _________________ "Oh my God. There she is. Lovely Sally Slater. I should speak to her. But what the hell can I say? Anything that doesn't mention that I masturbate over her memory is probably a good idea."

If it was me I would move Poni and White any time now and then aim for Van Ryn, Kubina, Antropov, and Myers as deadline moves.
Fletcher really really talks up Kulemin and to a degree Grabovski since the leafs got him, so I suspect he will be given every chance to shine and frankly I'd be shocked if to start the year Kulemin is not getting 1st unit PP time. _________________ It's not you Sundin, it's me...please just leave...and don't look back....please please do not look back. |
