Something has to give in this game: the Canucks' brutal home record is put up against the Predators' ugly road record.

Storylines:

This game is straight out of the "you think you've got problems?" file. The Predators' struggles, particularly on the road, have been even worse than Vancouver's of late. Nashville has not yet won a road game this season, being outscored 21-3 (!) in five losses.

Of course every Canuck fan knows what that means: the Canucks haven't earned the reputation as the league's premier slump-busters for nothing. All history says that the sub-.500 Canucks, despite a disastrous 1-5 home record, will take the Predators lightly. Particularly given the Canucks' tendency to play poorly after a layoff of more than one day, there are many reasons to think Nashville breaks the goose-egg tonight.

Preds' goaltender Chris Mason has lost seven starts in a row, posting a 5.08 GAA in that span, making Saskhab do his best I-told-you-so dance. Rookie Dan Ellis, by contrast, won his last two starts before Mason's most recent defeat, a 5-1 loss to Calgary on Tuesday.

Vancouver is 9-1-1 with one tie in its last 12 home meetings against the Predators. The law of averages just got out of bed and is now brushing its teeth.

Nashville has lost seven of its last nine games, Vancouver has lost three of the last four. Can't you hear those Titans clashing?

Adding injury to insult in this case, the Canucks will be without Lukas Krajicek again, their best defenseman in the early going, and will also be missing Willie Mitchell, after Kevin Bieksa plowed a slap-shot into his defense partner's foot in practice -- in a microcosm of the pairing's season thus far. Jeff Cowan also remains out.

Mason Raymond has been sent to Manitoba -- perhaps for good this time -- and the Great Dane Jannik Hansen has been called up, despite only playing a single AHL game this season after breaking a finger in preseason. Early signs indicate that Hansen will skate alongside Henrik and Daniel Sedin.

Laughing

I've got nothing against Chris Mason. Except that he isn't Tomas Vokoun. Wink

Ellis, I believe was born in Saskatoon, but he's an Ontario boy. Kind of like how Cam Ward was born here but is really from Sherwood Park, Alta.

Hansen was the odds on favourite to make the team coming out of prospects camp , itll be interesting to see if he can build off his playoffs and camp.

Too bad Jeff Cowan reaggrivated his hip. WIth all this trade talk with Atlanta , maybe Nonis is looking at Eric Boulton. Usually Cowan plays these divisional games vs Cgy and Minny especially.

Tonight's game isnt a do or die must win , in that if they dont win they're out.. But this is a must win in that they are 1-5 at home and Nash is beatable... must win.

And we know what the Canucks do when a beatable team comes to town. They think they have it in the bag. And with this four-day layoff they've just had, they're certain to be in for a slow start.

This will actually be Hasnen's first ever NHL regular season game, won't it?

I can't see the Canucks taking this lightly since they haven't been all that stellar lately themselves and lost the last game they played. Now that Hallowe'en is over they can put away their Jekyl and Hyde costume they have worn during games, the best examples being the second San Jose and the LA games where they looked good for 40 minutes yet played the shits just long enough to lose both games. Nashville doesn't score many goals. With Mitchell and Krajicek out the team and the forwards especially need to play solid defensivley for 60 minutes. No excuses here, fatigue shouldn't be a factor.

good news is Mitch is most likely to play. No news on the test on his foot but he was skating and says he's in.

Well, if anyone didn't see that disaster coming, as well predicted in the first post of this thread, they're not a Canuck fan.

What's far worse than the one game is the possibility of having lost BXA for the season and Salo long term.

And since Razz will try to gloat about how "brittle" the defense corps is, both were freak injuries (skate blade slicing tendon, puck to the nose) that have nothing to do with brittleness).

It's frustrating because BXA was actually having one of his better games. Luongo didn't look set on the first goal - partially screened, and Salo's missed shot resulted in a breakaway for Erat - we needed to Luongo to stop that one, but it was a great move by Erat. The Sedins look to be in a slump of pre-lockout proportions; no one seems to have much confidence when the cross the opposing blue line; frustrating, frustrating, frustrating...

Wow, that is just pure, plain, unadulterated, bad fuckin' luck right there. To lose Salo and Bieksa on two freak accidents like that in the same game is just plain weird.

dont let the stats fool you , this wasnt a case of Vancouver dominating and Ellis putting on a show and stealing this from Vancouver. It was fugly for both teams , it was everything as advertised and Van didnt generate much with the shots advantage.

Dont need 20 games to access the situation , the Canucks are in trouble. 1-6 at home is inexcusable , its embarrasing and most importantly its not good enough. Laforge had a home record equal to that. They play 8 straight div games and are battered up with no signs of the cavalry coming.

Early word is Bieksa 60% tear in his Achilles tendon and Salo , fractured orbital bone.. thats just early rumours.
