If I'm spending over $100.00, I research the piss out of my prospective purchase. I have Obesessive compulsive disorder & it freakin' sucks! So without further ado, Harmfuljays & I were talking about 'puters last night ... I was on the verge of picking up a Toshiba (factory refurbished), though it has WinVista on it & after tinkering around w- my roommates computer in which has Vista as well ... I'm thinking I'm going to stick with my XP.
Presently, I'm looking at:
http://www.usanotebook.com/2346-DLAD610_dell_latitude_D610.php for a base price of $439.00
and
http://www.usanotebook.com/2060-DLAD610_dell_latitude_D610.php for a base price of $479.00
Now for the $479.00, I have 40GB as oppossed to 60GB with the $439.00 one. However, for the extra money, I have a Intel Pentium M 1.73Ghz instead of a Intel Pentium M 1.6Ghz
Is there really any difference between the 2 processors? I don't see any other difference aside that I have the option of adding DVDRW with the $479.00 'puter (for added fees of course)
I just don't want to drop $500 on a factory refurb & end up having the thing be junk.
My primary purpose is to just have my own computer (I have only a work laptop right now) that I can get wireless internet, word, excel, and that's about it. I want somethign fast though ... I've very impatient. _________________

dude......I am not sure what your malfunction is.....you could buy the satellite and then load XP on it. But whatever...like I said I have a Latitude D600 that I use all the time. I've got a Pentium M 1.6 with 2 G of ram running XP Pro. It works fine for what I do. And isn't so expensive that I fret when I spill beer on it. The 610 is a fine buy. Just do it already.
I don't find that HD size matters much anymore because I'd rather store everything on externals. _________________

Well I never thought of loading XP on it if I dispise the VISTA that much .... I imgaine that's always an option! In hindsight, it's probably good that I research this, as I know very little about 'puters (I've never owned one ... only used work ones)
Dude ...if they made a merlot ( ) Toshiba Satelitte, I'd have already bought it! _________________

Agreed. Only irritation I found was in finding software (print drivers, etc.) that were compatible. Now that Vista isn't brand-spanking-new, you shouldn't have that problem anymore. |

Yes -
I did a test run emailing documents to my roommate's computer (I'm running Windows XP on this) .... Word documents will open on VISTA and if you type a document on VISTA, you can save it as a WORD 98 (otherwise, it won't open on the old operating systems)
Adobe acrobat ... that didn't open on VISTA when I emailed it over to her 'puter ... _________________

Butch, if all you want to do is use XP and surf the net, check email, write a few docs and surf porn, both those choices will suffice. but you can't do much more, ie gaming.
i don't get why people bash Vista. Its a super easy windows operating system. The only downfall is that is a memory hog. If you have anything less then 2gig, its gonna be slow. Get 2g+ and your rocking.
as for the drivers, why is it MS responsibilty to get third party programs to work on there ops systems? thats like Honda bitching at Toyota cause there engine won't fit in their cars. |

Both the Dell & Toshiba have MEMORY 1024 MB That's only 1gig then, right?
The harddrive is 80 GB on the Toshiba & 40 GB on the Dell, that's only for storage though I suspect?
I saw a number of computers on the site with only 512 MB, but have the option to buy up to 1024 MB for about $30- _________________

yah 1024 is a gig, it goes up in 512 increments. But don't get anything less then 1gig, spend the extra 30 and use the speed. Multi-media on the net will run smoother
as for memory, im using about 40 gigs of my 250gigs and i have over 2000 mp3s and over 60 movies, plus a couple games!
so depending on how much media you have, obviously more is better |

1024 ... seems like I'm better served w- XP then. I'm noticing the new Toshiba's out there are 4G for memory .... and only about $100 more at Circuit City.
If I wanted to ditch the VISTA & install XP, I take it I can simply uninstall it from my computer & find somebody w- an XP CD to load up?
Thanks for the tutorial gentlemen. _________________

remember standard Vista only supports 3.3 G of memory........so even if you get the 4 it won't support all of it. I made this mistake on my Pavilion machine. _________________

I don't think you can go wrong with Dell. My current computer is a Dell and I've been so pleased with the service etc.. that my next one will be a Dell also.
Looking at some low cost alternatives to Dell:
Regardless of the cost, the latest box from Moldova doesn't look too promising.
Though the laptop looks kind of funky.
