The next three weeks will be crucial to the Detroit Red Wings and their Central Division opponenets. Three of the teams, Chicago, Columbus and St. Louis have all made large improvements. Even Nashville, which has taken a step backwards due to a number of issues, is still a difficult opponenet to play. The Red Wings have 9 games in the next three weeks against their Central Division foes only. The Red Wings' early season success will be judged against how they perform against the rest of the Central. It will show how far the other teams have progressed in their improvement and will also show where the Red Wings stand against the Central and the rest of the Western Conference roughly at the ¼ pole of the NHL season. If Detroit manages to win 6 out of 9 games they should be well on their way to another division title. Less than that and the Central could be a real dog fight this winter.
