As already reported by CLuvah. This is an incredibly aggressive move in a tight (but mediocre) division. To be fair, it's not like Armstrong has really made a ton of great moves as GM, aside from the hiring of Tippett as coach. It'll be interesting to see which direction the team goes in now. _________________ It's backwards time. |

This seems very unfair, especially in the wake of that letter the Stars president released basically explaining why the Stars didn't go big into the free agency pool this summer. He was playing GM with one hand tied behind his back from day one, trying to keep a competitive team out there with an owner who suddenly didn't want to spend any more and dealing with bad contracts Gainey doled out in a fit of insanity prior to jumping ship.
His best move was definitely hiring Tippett, although something tells me he's gone by the end of the season as well. His worst? I guess it might've been waiting one year too long to buy out Bill Guerin. But then again that might've been Tom "DVD" Hicks keeping him from doing that. Ownership forced him to ice a competitive team while at the same time trying to build through the draft. Unless you scout out a gem like Pavel Datsyuk or Henrik Zetterberg, you can't do both.
The next guy needs to take a good long look at this organization as a whole. The core is only getting older and there's no help coming from the system anytime soon. This team is just barely good enough to make it to the playoffs and that's it. Unless they want to make a case to have every game decided by a shootout, they'd damn well better think about tearing it all down and starting from scratch. |

There are a few problems with this team:
1) They have a lot of young players, but none of them are particularly great. Jokinen, Miettinen, Daley, Eriksson, Grossman, Polak, Niskanen, Lundqvist and Stephan are all pretty decent, but it remains to be seen if there's a star among the bunch. The team is paying for years of having to draft from 20-30 in the first round
2) Morrow hasn't had a healthy season as captain yet
3) Turco is amazing when he wants to be, but weird
4) Sort of like the Habs, they're missing that big presence at centre. Lindros was a half-assed attempt at fixing that
5) Pierre Dagenais isn't on this team
6) There are a lot of scrubs patrolling the grinder lines. Who the hell are Chris Conner and Krys Barch? Barnes, Ott, Fedoruk and Wincester are known quantities, but those are six marginal players right there
Seems odd to make the move now, but maybe they have a guy in their sights already, like John Muckler. _________________ Beat my drum down in Mexico! To Tijuana, Tijuana here we go!

According to Mirtle, Armstrong targeted Kariya this offseason before putting the big time offer for Kozlov on the table (which he turned down). The Stars just didn't have the cap space to match the big ass contract St. Lou gave Paul.
Paul in Dallas would've been... probably a lot like Paul in his last year in Anaheim under Babcock. Good, but not great. _________________ It's backwards time. |

Scratch that...Armstrong's worst move may have been to acquire Nolan Baumgartner. See what happened last year when Philly signed him and the year before that when he played in Vancouver. Proof positive the man is kryptonite to any organization he's with.
I hope Hull trades him back to Vancouver. That'd be awesome. |

I actually like Baumgartner, but nevertheless: May Martin Skoula show up at your doorstep with Bob Saget, and a copy of the B-side from Eddie Murphy's Party All the Time on endless loop. _________________

Ouch, the only way that could be more harsh is if Jeff Shantz and Bates Battaglia come along as backup dancers.
BTW I find it amusing that your favorite all-time player is one of Vancouver's most beloved and you are the staunchest defender of two of the most maligned. I guess I can see some of what you like in Sopel apart from his rather iffy fashion sense, but I see nothing of what you like in Baumer. The guy sucks, period.
BTW I realize now that the last sentence could lend itself to a Tlusty segueway... |

After spending a season with the Stars, Weisbrod joined the scouting staff of the Boston Bruins on September 14, 2006 as a pro scout based out of Tampa, Florida.

The pro scout for the Bruins? If he had any input in the trading with St Loo, among other teams, Razz and our Bruins contingent might tell you otherwise _________________ Bring back the old OTP!
