They didn't even half-ass NHL 08 for the PC again this year.

Graphics are essentially the same(where are the hugely improved details?).

Two resolutions: 800x600 and 1024x768 Rolling Eyes

Kopitar shoots right.

Something is fucked with the controller setup so you can't change ANYTHING. Rolling Eyes

NO patches or roster updates yet Rolling Eyes

Crashes galore(that doesn't even get an eyeroll it's so unsurprising).

I wonder if the salary cap actually goes up now when you use the upgrade in your dynasty to do it? In 07, using an upgrade to increase the salary cap did absolutely nothing.

Contracts are wrong everywhere.

Fucking EA Rolling Eyes

I've heard rumblings about how EA has been going downhill for a few years now...

With the Wii, we also got Wii Sports, Wii Play, Star Wars Complete Saga, Spiderman Friend or Foe, Mario Galaxy, Pokemon something-or-other, and some other Mario games that came with the E10+ bundle from EBGames.com... I think I'll be fighting my wife and kids for the use of the Man's Room more often now... Mad

My sister-in-law gave me COD4 for the XBox360...

Get NiGHTS for the Wii, and you'll need a classic controller since the remote control scheme blows. Great game.

Both the EA and 2K NHL's were god awful across the board. In the three week window in which I was testing both extensively, I had a combined 20 crashes, including a scary moment involving my PS3 making weird noises. The EA one is a major mess. I try to be as objective as possible and not judge games based on the company that publishes them, but EA had a poor year beyond Skate and C&C3. Thankfully Army of Two shows great promise.

Tiger Woods for the 360 is unplayable because of the bugs and crashes. The PS3 one is okay if you stay away from the system frying Challenge mode,

Didn't they have a lawsuit or something from families of people working there because they were working regular 80-hour work weeks or something?

Who knows. Maybe EA is saying fuck it to making games and focusing their efforts on publishing.

Madden, NCAA, NBA, FIFA... enjoying those thoroughly. NHL is good too but I've discovered that it's far too easy to use a screen as you cross the blueline and then pop it back over the goalie's glove...

Saw this game previewed on the Game Play HD Channel...

Looks like it's already out, but it looks AWESOME! The site says you can download a demo on the XBOX Live Marketplace. May give it a shot to see exactly how awesome it might be.

Anyhow...thought I would pass it along.

Looks like a cross between Gears and COD4. Fascinating.

Does anyone have experience with the PS3 or it's online gaming? I've heard that it's a non-pay service.

I may be looking at the 40GB PS3. I don't need the backwards-compatibility of the 80GB model because I don't have a PS1 or 2.

I've heard it's free, too, but Sony has allowed developers to charge a subscription fee for some games: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Playstation_3

Quote:
In response to Microsoft's success on their Xbox Live network, Sony announced a unified online service for the PlayStation 3 system at the 2006 PlayStation Business Briefing meeting in Tokyo. Sony has confirmed that the service will be always connected,[83] free and include multiplayer support; however, developers are permitted to charge a subscription fee, as is common with MMO games. Also, the registration interface can only be accessed through the PS3 system interface.[84]

On XBox Live, you can access your registration info on your PC.

It's a pretty compelling sales pitch; HDMI, Blu-Ray, true HD gaming, and a free online service. I might consider it but for the fact that I already bot the HD-DVD player for the '360, Santa is re-upping my XBox Live service, and I'm happy with the 720p/1080i resolution that I get now. And there aren't any games that aren't available on the Wii or '360 that are compelling enough for me to consider making the switch...

EDIT: Make sure you check out the ratings for those PS3 games in Gamespot.com or Metacritic.com... Chances are, many of the better games you'd want to play are available on the PC anyway (Orange Box, COD4, HALO...); just checked it out myself and most of the ones rated in the 80s and 90s are available on the 360...

I'm thinking of the PS3 because of the built-in blu-ray. 360+HD-DVD runs close to 600 bucks. I probably wouldn't be buying a next-gen system if not for next-gen-dvd player and the fact that I missed out on a boxing day doorcrasher for a Toshiba HD-DVD player, 2 movies and an HDMI cable for only $100 Mad

Right now Dell has a deal for the 40GB PS3 with Ratchet and Clank and an HDMI cable for $400. I might take that to a bestbuy or futureshop and see if they'll match while substituting a different game and an extra controller instead of the HDMI cable. Apparently they've matched Dell deals before.

Well, if you're not in it for the gaming, save yourself the $100 and get this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136133&ATT=27-136-133&CMP=OTC-pr1c3watch&nm_mc=OTC-pr1c3watch&cm_mmc=OTC-pr1c3watch-_-CD/DVD+Burners+(RW+Drives)-_-LG+Electronics-_-27136133

Play all the Blu-Ray and HD-DVD porn to your heart's content... Very Happy

I've seen that thing before.

Well, of course the gaming is part of it Smile I've always been a PC gamer, but getting the Blue-Ray as part of the PS3 is something that I wouldn't mind going for.

Heads-up! Freebies on the way... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7171355.stm Very Happy

I also noticed some squirrelly things on my Live account particularly around Christmas...

Oh ya another thing about buying a PS3 over the next little while is the 5 free Blu-Ray movies for any purchased Blue-Ray player. Amazon usually has plenty of deals on them as well.

http://images.amazon.com/media/i3d/01/5free_oct07feb08_form_2.pdf

WalMart had one where they were giving away 12 with a Toshiba HD DVD player before Christmas: http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/dealzmodo/toshiba-hd-dvd-and-12-free-movies-at-wal+mart-for-300-331083.php

The XBox HD DVD player came with King Kong. I also picked up Letters from Iwo Jima (5 pucks) and Lost, Season 1 for HD-DVD.

Now that Warner has joined the Dark Side, I'm guessing that Toshiba will pull out all the stops to try to win people over - or just give away the remaining stocks of HD DVDs... Which reminds me: I need to check out Netflix and compare it to Blockbuster online.

IMO, there is a noticeable improvement but it doesn't justify the higher cost of the HD DVDs... At least not at the full price. I'm waiting for the prices of these things to come down more.

My AV receiver is supposed to upconvert but in reality, it doesn't make that much of a difference... If you have a 480p/i signal, no machine is going to figure out how to go up to 720p or even 1080i. I checked around and this is as good an answer as I've seen: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/81635

Perhaps upconverting does smooth out the graininess... But the picture still sucks when compared to true HD at 720p. The long and short of it is, don't spend money on something that is supposed to 'upconvert'. CI games that aren't in HD really suck ass. I really shouldn't have re-upped this season and waited until more games were available in HD. I understand that all analog signals will go away in just over a year from now; I'll be interested to see if that means more programming will go HD (I doubt it).

That's the only beef that I have with Center Ice Online. There's zero HD. They say that their bandwidth can't handle an HD signal. Apparently they were going to try to do a few games in HD this year, but I haven't really looked around for more news about it. Games still look decent enough on on my 40", but it would still be nice if they were HD. I'm definitely not going to spend a ton of dough every month for HD satellite or cable and then the additional cost of CI just to watch games in hi-def.

Last year, maybe one game or two per week was available in HD. This season, it isn't unusual for there too be two or three games in HD per night. Most often, the games that are in HD are in US-based arenas... I think maybe one game has ever made it on CI down here from HNIC in HD... Rolling Eyes
