I was watching HNIC Hot Stove -

Al Strachan says if Sundin were to lift his NTC , Vancouver would be his top choice , possibly only choice. Strachan says Sundin would like to stay in Canada at the least.

Other big news , Swedish UFA , Fabian Brunnstrom , 22 yrs old star in the Elite League says he's coming to the NHL next season and has narrowed his short list to 5 teams and within that top 5 , has a top 3 of Detroit , Toronto and Vancouver. According to Pierre Lebrun on the HNIC HOt Stove.

I love this time of the season. Deadline is a little over a month away!!! c'mon!

If Sundin is willing to come here, then I say AV should go after it. Sundin might be what Naslund needs to get going; what would it take? Tranna needs some inexpensive options on defence, don't they? That eliminates any of the top 4 - they'd want Edler, Bourdon, Schneider, or Raymond - no way would I want to see that to happen. I wouldn't be averse to giving up a Jaffray, some spare parts and/or a pick or two (no higher than a 2nd rounder) but I don't know what JFJ would want. Balej is injured, isn't he?

Dunno about his other kid; can't see Vancouver coming out on top in a bidding war with Detroit. Mad

I'm hoping this organization isn't going to trade the young guys for another aging Swede.

If we can get Forsberg, for available funds, for this year's run at the cup, I'd be delighted. Assuming he can play, and wants to come here, he can make things happen and kick-start Nazzy as well as anyone.

Sundin costs the farm.
Foppa costs nothing more than the owner's pocket change.

Then you would not get Mats Sundin. Laughing If the Strachan report is true, he's not Ken Griffey Jr.-ing the Leafs, he's just naming his first choice. You'd need a way bigger package than what you've named, even if the NTC makes it slightly harder on Toronto.

I'll bet the Brunnström report is exaggerated, too. Some armchair GM probably just said, "Which teams have a lot of Swedes on them?"

Eklund as reliable as he is says the key piece going the other way would be Kesler. In which case no deal sto ptalking now and move on to a rental that isn't gonna cost a roster player. Especially the future captain! I'd like to see MAts here but not at that expense. We're talking about adding a player for a cup run not to build the team around why not look at a Robert Lang or some such player. OUr most likely trade partners would be a team in the South East who is sitting out of the playoff picture.

Unfortunately for you, no team in the SE is out of the playoff picture. The SE Division Champ is currently on pace for about 85-86 points (with 8 teams in the other 2 divisions finishing ahead of them, but one not making the playoffs), so everyone in that division, including Tampa Bay, are still in it. In fact, Tampa's only 7 points out with games in hand, yet sit last in the entire Eastern Conference.

yeah , I agree with the general thought , dont buy into the rentals , we're not a Sundin away from the Cup yet.

With that being said , its indeed on the radar and in play. Its similar to Forsberg last season except there's the possibility the short list could be 2 teams including Vancouver as the prefered choice. Aquilini last week for his part said on the record in response to the first Sundin rumour story he would make the SUndin deal if it was affordable in trade and resign him.

I brought this up in the Leafs forum but how tempted would everyone be about trading a high priced package of Kesler , Bourdon and a 1st rd pick if it meant that Forsberg would follow Sundin here. The money works , and its not that crazy , its a long shot but not impossible ..but just for hypothetical sakes , how tempting is that now for you as Canucks fans?

Fun times nonetheless...

Quote:
As far as Mats Sundin is concerned, Strachan says that Mats Sundin would prefer to stay in Canada and possibly play for the Vancouver Canucks to protect investment options, but LeBrun says that Sundin wants to finish his NHL career in Toronto, while Strachan says that Leafs GM John Ferguson Jr. is asking for an "astronomical" return, including Canucks defenceman Alexander Edler. The CBC's Scotty Morrison says that the Flames are scouting the Leafs, the Anaheim Ducks are interested in Sundin, and Vancouver in particular is a front-runner, but grumpy Dave Nonis doesn't want to pay an exorbitant price for a rental player.

Sounds like he's still mentoring under BB. Laughing

He was on the Team today, asked about rentals, pointing out that the price is through the roof right now and isn't going to be going down...

He also revealed something interesting... said he had a chance at the deadline to acquire a high scoring winger, a rental, last year, for Alexander Edler. Noted that at the time Canucks fans would have thought yeah that could work, but now it would have been a horrible deal. Wonder who it was, Nagy maybe...

Sundin has been a monster lately, no clue why. Maybe he is showcasing himself, maybe he is doing everything he can to get his beloved Leafs into the playoffs. Great acquisition but the Leafs will want Kesler, Bourdon, etc etc. Plus more to the point JFJ has the vaudeville hook out WAY past his neck Laughing so the idea of him rebuilding is far fetched...

If Fletcher takes over I look forward to the 6-6 deal he'll work out with someone Laughing

Murray is still available if you're interested, secondary scoring and all... we'll accept a first rounder...

If there's going to be a package of Kesler plus going the other way in any deal it better be a blockbuster which I would not rank Sundin in. Why go after that deal when there's a way better chance of moving for V. Kozlov or possibly a player fro ma team that will be or is rebuilding Erat or Dumont come to mind. If it's a big package going the other way I'd want to here the nux tossed into the Hossa talks.

part of the debate going around town is , Is this the year the Canucks "go for it" ? to justify moving young assets for a rental.

Hence why some media like Kuzma and co. and fans feel they should make the Sundin trade or any rental , willing to sacrifice the future for a push this season.

Me , personally , I still think next season is the one to consider "selling out" and "going for it". But with that being said , any season with Luongo in his prime cant be wasted.

Yeah, this isn't 1995 anymore. The favorite to win the Cup is never going to be a complete team with no holes to speak of. Were Carolina or Anaheim head and shoulders above the opposition like the Gretzky Oilers or Bossy Islanders? No, there are incredibly small margins separating the good from the bad in a capped league.

Every year is technically the year to go for it (within reason), and every year will seem like next year may be better. If there's one thing Canuck fans should have learned by now, it's that you can count on nothing for the future. Like having a baby, you can always come up with reasons why this "isn't the year." And it's probably not -- there are 30 teams after all. But you can only win by trying.

I wouldn't give up Edler for Sundin, for example, but I would consider many options, provided this team shows some signs of righting the ship.

Hossa would require too much present day talent, IMO, because I don't see the blue chipper prospect that would make Waddell bite. Bourdon and Kesler might do it, Atlanta has no use for Schnieder. But would you give up those two to rent Hossa? Probably not...

Let somebody else have Hossa , he stinks of Yashin.

Even Sundin reeks a little of Vancouver Messier , his heart is in Toronto.

Take it for what its worth , its Eklund

Eklund has Sundin to VAncouver at E4 (E5 being the highest , E5= done deal)

---------------------------------------------------------
At the rumoured prices , being the same as last year's Forsberg , Tkachuk , ... Nobody can see Nonis biting on it and I dont blame him for not biting. Stay away ( at those prices). I wish Fletcher was Mke Milbury in disguise but wait and see...

Marleau to Montreal was E4 for Eklund for about 8 months running.

Smyth re-signing with Edmonton before the deadline was E5.
