Dead serious. I think Ward is highly overrated. His playoff run got him the rep as a big time goalie but he was average or below average last year and pretty average so far this year. He wins games because the Canes score a ton but his GAA and save % are basically Kolzig/Labarbera territory. Grahame is not good, so if anything happens to Ward this team that right now looks like it has potential to go deep in the playoffs goes downhill fast. Grabbing Bryz gives you a legit backup in case of injury to Ward and can push him. He's cheap and only on contract for a year so there is very little downside to grabbing him and huge potential upside.

Ask sask about Ward's career (not that it's gospel or anything but hey he's done the research whereas I haven't). His talent is proven at every level he's played. He plays behind a team that employs a run-and-gun style and a defense that's nowhere near Stanley Cup caliber. It was his playoff heroics that won the Canes their Cup, don't just look at the stats. If Ward had a better blueline in front of him he'd be posting much better numbers. The reason for his sub-par sophomore season is more the result of a Stanley Cup hangover and the fact that he probably didn't show up for camp in shape last season. When Frantisek effin' Kaberle is essentially your top defender, you got problems on that blueline.

You're right about the Canes being screwed if Ward goes down...but I don't think Bryz would be the solution, Rutherford could use his cap space toward a defensive acquisition or maybe even another scoring forward to replace the ever-injured Erik Cole.

Atlanta, depends on the seriousness of the Lehtonen injury. But why not? Gets Pavelec back in the AHL and you see if you've got a new goalie to go with Lehtonen for next year. If ownership approves, why not?

That's just it though, Atlanta's owners can't even decide who owns the friggin' team let alone the netminding situation.

Yeah, that's the catch. Two of these teams could be too hampered by their ownership situation to make a play on Bryz. Confused

Didn't stop the Nucks from getting Luongo, did it?

If Manny's knee is fucked we would be interested, especially with Bergy out...

He had a great Cup run, I just think he has been average since. Carolina D is no worse than Washington or LA so the stats comparison with Kolzig and Labarbera is valid IMO. Showing up at camp out of shape is a great reason to get someone to push him.

If I were the Hurricanes I'd want a solid back-up and I don't think cap space is a big issue with Bryz's reasonable salary, which is lower than Grahame's. It seems like these days goalies get hurt way more often and you need two solid goalies, with Bryz himself a good example of how this saved Anaheim in the playoffs.

He showed up to camp in great shape this year after losing 20 pounds, not out of shape. I don't know if he was out of shape last season, or if it was just that he weighed a bunch more.

Wow. Shows you how tough the trade market really is.

Would it be totally unrelated to now say the Toskala trade by JFJ was AWESOME!

Rolling Eyes

Not a bad start for the kid either - on a weak Phoenix team at that.
