What about the 2 Jimmy's? Hendrix and Page? I think they were pretty good?! |
They were both awesome in their day(though I haven't seen or heard anything from Page at all recently), but is the question referring to all-time or right now? _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

KU has had repeat invites to perform at the Grammy's, and judging by the top 40 sluts that attend his concerts, I'd say his popularity has transcended country music.
Plus, as the good doctor points out, creativity is huge. Not only is his music insanely complicated, it's the improvisation at his live shows that convinces me he's one of the world's best... |

Dude, you are SO out of your element when you have to rely on the Grammys and "top 40 sluts" attending concerts to justify your opinion.
And since when does popular equal good? Candle in the Wind is the top selling single of all time...does that make it the best song ever and Elton John the greatest artist ever? Fck no. |

OK, my curiosity is piqued. I don't want to judge a book by it's cover, so recommend me some Keith Urban vids on YouTube and I'll give some feedback. There's too much stuff on him and I don't want to waste time on his radio hits and ballads, so some live stuff if you know of a good track that shows off his ability.
He could very well be a great guitarist and a creative visionary, I won't hold his top-40 success and his partnerships with Maroon 5 and Chad Kroeger against him.
I will say I'm not a big fan of either Jimmy Page or Jimi Hendrix. Page stole all his riffs from old black guys (who arguably played them better), and Hendrix rarely took advantage of his immense talent. His Dylan cover pretty much captured his essence, and that's about it.
McLaughlin was mentioned, and as a huge fan of Bitches Brew (best anything, as far as I'm concerned) and The Inner Mounting Flame, I concur. He can be dreadfully boring though.
How about Glenn Tipton/K.K. Downing from Judas Priest? Stained Class as a whole is pretty fantastic. Who does the solo on "Beyond the Realms of Death"? _________________ It seems like you need to be a physics professor to choose the right TV. Luckily, I am one.

I'm not holding it against him, I'm just saying that it's not something to brag about that would put him in the category of being the best guitar player in the world. _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

Oh we didn't, we didn't.
Even though I posted that my fave guitarist has always been and always will be Joe Satriani. He puts on a good show.
Oh since we're on the subject of guitarists, Steve Vai is a poser. |

Not sure if it's your style, but check out "Friday Night in San Francisco" with Paco DeLucia and Al DiMilo (not sure on the spellings). It's live and freakin' awesome, but it has a spanish flavour to it.. Also cool is Shakti - check out what he did to a guitar

Hmmmm..I'll weigh in here even though I do not have the extensive knowledge of guitar players that y'all have.
Joe Satriani
Steve Vai
Jimmy Page - I'm really tired of people saying he 'stole' blues riffs - that's old rumor. Most guitar artists copied or 'stole' (in your words) from the blues greats. I don't feel it is stealing - it is emulating, learning and developing one's own style.
Since you guys talk of stealing - who of the old blues greats would you mention here in the "Best of" list? _________________ No one can make you feel inferior without your permission. |

I'm going to defend Razz as far as judging a musician's talent based on their genre. I don't like new country music, in fact I despise it, but I know that there are some really talented country musicans out there and I've heard some chickin pickin that has blown my head off.
As for the Maroon5 comment, I can say nothing.
One of my favorite music videos was of Frank Zappa slaying Steve Vai on stage. Steve Vai is wearing leopard print cheesy shorts and acting all rock star-like and Frank calmly waits his turn and rips-calmly. |

I'm not sure that he quite bites, but I'd be happy to take back the mention. |

What's a great guitarist thread with mentioning Frank Zappa?
Jeff Beck has some good stuff.
I like Robert Fripp a lot. Adam Jones too.
I'm no guitar expert by any stretch of the imagination, but isn't Tom Morello supposed to be pretty good? _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

| Went to Rock and Roll in Cleveland couple of weeks ago. They had some great stuff on Leadbelly-including his court paperwork charging him w/ homicide and his pardon letter. I think you cant single one person out as the best guitarist of all time. More appropriate to do on a genre basis and even then the most influential folks all have their strong points. |
