Stevie Ray Vaughan and Gregg/Duane Allman I personally like more.

I'd say Ottmar Liebert too, but that's because my background is in flamenco.

Also, Leadbelly was probably the best 12-stringer ever:

That's him pioneering the music video - in 1945! Pick a Bale of Cotton is my favourite.

I just saw the greatest guitarist in the world perform a couple weeks ago, actually.

http://www.garethpearson.com/

He's a 19-year old Welsh kid who's only been playing since he got a guitar for Christmas 2002! I've never heard anything like him...

EL already beat me to it .... the guy was downright compulisive & in his earlier years, played to the point until his fingers actually bled. Shocked

I know they are not the best in the world but I like The Edge and Mark Knopfler as a couple of my favorites because they have their own sound and I like that sound. Have no idea if it's at all hard to play.

Most overrated guitarists: Peter Frampton and Eddie Van Halen

Most underrated: Steve Hackett (who knew that speed wasn't the only way to show off talent)

It’s one thing to evaluate skill – as you folks seem to be doing here in this thread, but creativity is second to none. You can have one of the most skilled & intricate guitar players in the World & they can still suck (and will be working at your local music store). Surprised

Another favorite of mine though however:

Steve Harris – in my opinion, one of the best overall composers EVER in rock music (he plays bass, not guitar – let’s not overlook the bass players though however)

technique? Andres Segovia
technique and feeling? John McLaughlin, for sure.
Feeling? way too subjective though I generally agree with Hounsey, and would add Robert Johnson and B.B. King. SRV is definitely in the running too.
Favorite? Lita Ford. Best ass on a guitarist. Biggest Ass would be Steve Vai. Smile

Ry Cooder gets some consideration too for being a master technician and player (with feeling) on the slide.

What's laughable is that you have no idea what you're talking about. Every other artist in the genre raves about their guitar playing ability. Just because Brad Paisley plays neo-traditional country doesn't mean his guitar playing is any less good than any of your "rock star" faves.

As for KU, there's a reason he was jamming with Maroon 5 at an awards show a while back. There's a reason he won entertainer of the year. Have you seen the guitar music for his shit??? And the solos and intros and outros of his live act - go watch his live DVD and then talk to me about the greatest guitarist in the world...

Key word that you said being genre.

Ooooooh...Maroon 5 Laughing That's almost as impressive as when you were raving about someone bringing out Chad Kroeger as their special guest Laughing
