Chaos continues to surround the Maple Leafs, as it has been reported that general manager John Ferguson attempted to fire head coach Paul Maurice last week but was not allowed to do so.

As discussed in Monday's Toronto Sun, several sources confirmed with the paper that the Leafs are frantically searching for Ferguson's replacement.

But JFJ says it's a load of hooey:

Hooo boy:

The potential changes could even involve some kind of management committee that could include names like Mark Messier, Joe Nieuwendyk and Glenn Healy.

It is nothing short of hilarious that a commitee wants to have the front office run like a...commitee. I had a feeling MLSE would look right at Dallas's recent move and try something similar. Funny thing is, while the Stars have improved their play of late, the new-fangled front office there hasn't done jack shit apart from waiving Todd Fedoruk. Laughing

Hey, it's somehow working on Long Island.

Really, MLSE could've just looked over at that other high end sports team they run and realize what one competent man running the show can accomplish on his own.

I heard somewhere that the NBA basically handed Colangelo to the Raptors.

I love hearing everyone and their Mom's name linked to the Leafs. It's hilarious but maddening at the same time.

From Damien Cox at the Star:
http://www.thestar.com/Sports/Hockey/article/279807

"Either combination – Healy-Messier or Campbell-Yzerman – would completely alter the public perception of the Leaf operation."

Shocked

Something needs to change soon, but I highly doubt either scenario is based in reality. Who would you guys pick if either was an option?

How so? Colangelo left of his own volition, and a lion's share of the blame goes squarely to the current Suns owner who apparently is as meddlesome as they come.

I really wonder how in hell you can rebuild in a fan culture as fucked up as the one that exists in Toronto (present company excluded of course). All that money for a whole lot of grinders and one aging star. And I'm betting more than a few STILL believe all it would take is a few free agents and a new coach to turn it all around. If everyone and their mom TRULY wanted to play in Hogtown, why isn't this team a perennial band of All-Stars year-in, year-out? So far the only players I know of who have taken any sort of "discount" to become that team they so wanted to play for growing up are Peca, Lindros, and O'Neill.

This is just what I heard on the radio. I heard that after he left, the NBA basically went to him and said that they want him to run the Raptors. The NBA went to the Raptors and said "We want Colagelo in here, we think he can do a great job with your organization, and you can get him in here". I didn't hear any details other than that.

Toronto Raptors for all it's problems at the time Colangelo came on board was ready to go with Bosh, villanueva, an higher first in the draft pick coming up and very little in the way of cap tied up as right before he came in Toronto's intern GM dumped Rose. Colangelo was given complete control of a team ready for the upward swing of the rebuild so I can certainly see him going on his own. In his first off season he was able to replace I believe nine players, if that's not being able to go in and put your stamp on things I don't know what is.

There was an awful lot more going for the Raptors when he came on board than what the Leafs have to offer their next guy so as much as people in the Toronto area like to talk about the Leafs getting their own "Colangelo" the situations are really very different.

Maybe Gherardini is ready to run the Raps and Colangelo always looking for the next challenge can run the Leafs. Laughing
Joking aside he likely wouldn't do worse as he'd understand a cap reality which right away puts him ahead of JFJ in my books. Mad

The best thing that happened to the Habs was its sale to a private owner and taking the team away from the corporate structure and its central ethos of profit-making. Until this happens with the Leafs, they will continue to spin their wheels on the ice while making shitloads of money. It will probably take a loss in profit for that switch to happen in T.O. - that's what it took in Montreal.

The Leafs do need a guy of impeccable credentials to usher in a rebuilding process.

Ferguson just wasn't that man. I think he kind of knew what he needed to do, but was constantly under the gun and made moves in desperation. Though I still don't get the Raycroft/Rask one at all.

And Maureen, not that I think it's in the cards at all, but I'd take the Campbell/Yzerman combo any day of the week. I think Healy/Mess would be a disaster in comparison.

The thing with the GM role is that you can always delegate and create that team atmosphere they seem to think is needed with this whole idea of combos and complicated decision making manners. Detroit isn't just Holland calling all the shots. He trusts all his assistants and scouts and has been able to keep a group together for a long time in this manner. New Jersey hasn't lost many assistants or scouts over the years... and even with all their firing of coaches, seem to retain some of them in other roles.

Yup, Leaf fans are their own worst enemy. Too bad only the ones here realize it. Laughing

Funny you say that, the recent couple of years of sucking and the slow grasp that there is a cap has the fans close to ready to accept an actual rebuild this time I think. Well enough of them anyway.

I wouldn't say the fans are the hardest of the bunch to convince... it's the "hockey world" that will be tough.

If CBC is showing less games now imagine how many less they'll show if the Leafs miss the playoffs for the next 3 more years? How will the board take that? How will the media take it in a market where there are 10 times the media as any other devoted just to hockey?

Rebuilding in Montreal hasn't been easy, and the team's not out of it yet after being told this was the plan since 2001 (and considering they missed the playoffs 3 consecutive years before this, the parallels are very relevant). Toronto will be that much more difficult simply because of the money making ability the team has... and a desire not to lose that status.

The problem is, you know that most fans will think rebuilding means like a 10-game losing streak and then a trip to the Cup Finals. I've said it before and I'll say it again: I'll bet money that if the Leafs actually do finally rebuild, everyone will be calling for the GM/Coach/Goalie to get canned and start the rumblings of trading everyone with a JFJ clause 20 games into the first season of the rebuild. Also, nobody will accept rebuilding years while the hated Senators up the road keep on winning.

The Leafs are by one of, if not the most profitable team in the NHL. They have the cash flow to build a front office that could be right up there with the top teams in the league. Unfortunately, they have that fucking board in charge who know dick all about running a successful franchise, but think they do. Nobody will come in and run this thing unless they're given total freedom.

I think that is why it is critical they spell it out to the fans so even when those that are whining in two years are doing there thing they can say it is part of the plan and the GM who stuck to that plan is fine till next season when we expect to start seeing results.

Mistakes to attempt to cover mistakes is the current cycle and people are really starting to get why that is. The last two days is the most hope I've had since the lock out as a Leaf fan and I'll be damned if those Smelly Habs don't drop a turd and extend the insanity in Leaf land another few weeks. Mad

This season my hate/rivalry feelings towards the Habs has been growing and it's all because they keep window dressing my turd of a team.
