PREVIEW

Long story short, things are not good in Av-land, but hey it's not like they're the Maple Leafs or anything.

The good news is despite a power play next to last in the league (thankfully I believe Edmonton has the worst still, expect lots of great PK action in this game Laughing ) and an abysmal road record, poor defensive play, and shoddy goaltending, the Avs are still firmly in the Northwest Division title race.

Rumors surrounding a possible trade of impending-UFA John-Michael Liles are running rampant right now. After showing all kinds of promise his first two seasons, Liles has regressed badly since the departure of Rob Blake. He no longer shows the same savvy moving the puck up-ice, and despite a stronger committment to the defensive side of things, has been almost completely ineffective at both ends of the rink. Poor play from Brett Clark and diminishing returns from Scott Hannan aren't helping things. About the only bright spot on the Avs' blueline is Kurt Sauer, who's making a resurgence after two seasons as the Avs' 7th defenseman.

Bottom line, despite the additions of Sauer and Hannan, the defense is dreadfully undersized and soft with Clark, Kyle Cumiskey, and Liles all in the mix. They're all three the exact same kind of defenseman. One has got to go.

Trading/waiving Karlis Skrastins wouldn't be a bad idea either.

Anyhow, Quenneville will be showcasing a line of Hlinka-Stastny-Hejduk in a desperate bid to get the sputtering offense back on track. Stastny has shown he can finish as well as make plays, so the addition of Hlinka, who has also shown solid chemistry with Hejduk as well, should make for a good line and hopefully make for better offensive balance overall.

In any event, JUST FRICKING WIN ALREADY...

I think Liles has got to go. As you said, he started out good but has gone downhill. Maybe a change of scenery would do him good.

I'd rather we get rid of Clark, he was a journeyman anyway who seems to be coming back down to earth after two solid post-lockout seasons. But given the reality that he's signed for two more years and Liles isn't, he seems like the more viable candidate for a trade. Already Flames fans on the HF Boards are clamoring for him. Laughing

Anyway I'm still a bit reluctant because I'm still not sold on Cumiskey. He's even smaller than Liles, doesn't skate as well, and frankly is downright scary in the defensive end.

The problem is his pretentious first name.

Jack Liles. Sounds good to me. Maybe "Jack-Mike".

Well, nothin' like getting back in The Can and beating up on the Oilers to rally your spirits. Anaheim will be getting some very nice draft picks soon enough. I'm betting some way, some how both Lowe and MacT find their way to Toronto during the offseason.

Not likely. How many years did they just sign Lowe for? 20?

None of that will matter when Lowe's signing of Penner costs them a lottery pick. Only Peddie would be stupid enough to pick up the tab and bail Edmonton out of paying Lowe's remaning salary.
