Game Preview

This should be a good game as the lead in the NW Division is at stake.

A couple of sub-plots will make for an exciting game:

Can #1 extend his shut-out streak past 200 minutes?

This is the first game Ohlund is playing against the Wild since his suspension, that will be sure to stir up emotions but methinks the Boogeyman will likely stay under the bed.

An aside: Vancouver is as popular as ever in the Minnisota Press:

Well that's it for the second and that's it for me - gotta go do Christmas stuff. Hopefully the Nucks can pull this off in regulation. Smile

The Wild finally played like they wanted it more. They outskated and outplayed Vancouver through most of the second and third, and were it not for Luongo, the score might have been more lopsided. I figured they'd finally lose their cherry tonight - someone in the NW had to beat them so it might as well be the division leader.

Yeah, even the color guys from Minnesota were saying how much they dislike the Canucks. And while the refs did appear to let a lot go, it's not like they let the Canucks off the hook completely - the PPs were something like 7-2 for the Wild, wasn't it?

There doesn't seem to be any shortage of animosity for the Canucks as far as Minnesota goes - but this isn't anything new. What pisses me off were those TOO MANY MEN on the ice penalties that seemed to squash any hope of gaining back momentum. Only Luongo played well enough to win; the Canucks seemed to get too caught up in all the chirping all night to play their game. Although I did think he took a dive trying to draw a penalty (I don't think he was successful).

Vancouver-boy Voros has been a beast so far against Vancouver. Mad

And once again, the dreaded "More than one day between games" jinx rears its ugly head:

With no days off: 4-1-0
With 1 day off: 9-4-1
With 2+ days off: 1-4-1
And they play in Chicago on Wednesday... Mad

Didn't have the benefit of watching the game. Did you watch ?

Certainly territorial statistically speaking - outshot 30 - 20 and out hit 22 - 12 one might think it wasn't as close as the score.

Certainly the number of penalties the Nux were awarded in the first can have affect on how well a team plays. From a momentum perspective that could have influenced the whole game.

Whether the Wild "wanted" it more than the Nux or the influence of the "bad blood" between these two teams dictated the play, it seems this rivalry will continue, even tho' for the most part I think the Nux rivalry is more with the Alta teams than this edition from Minny.

ps.....tNCL...why isn't this updating in the Nux forum....??

I thought the Wild played like they wanted it at ALL - which was a departure from their previous two performances against you guys.

Luongo, and you don't need me to tell you this, is simply amazing. Just a dead-nasty combination of everything that makes goalies good, but that very, very few others have been able to combine at once.

The perception of the Canucks includes statements like "thin offensively" and I admit that I subscribe to this same mentality.

It certainly looked that way last night, though I will stipulate that on balance so far (3 games) you have more than had your way with the Wild offensively.

Is this true?

Do you guys think the Canucks have viable scoring in more than one place?

This has been the issue from the start of the AV reign, IMO.

The failure to get secondary scoring and now putting all the offense on one line. However, this is not a new idea as other teams are finding this to be true also. Can you say Ottawa.

Since the down turn of the WCE line, the Nux have not had the scoring threat that one would expect a contender to possess. Once that part of the puzzle is addressed, the Nux will be a legitimate post season contender, IMO.

Under the salary cap every team has its holes, and the bulk of Vancouver's money goes to Luongo and its defense, plus four forwards (Naslund, the Sedins and Morrison). As a result, it's basically impossible to get a whole lot more scoring without thinning out another area.

Welcome Nick! pleasure to meet new people , havent seen your name here before (or are you a veteran disguised with a new name? )... Rangers fan by any chance? thats my eastern team. Though I live and die with the mighty Orca overall.

To answer the question that Im too lazy to quote .. no I dont feel so , even for a Defence first team like Vancouver has , they dont have the scoring depth for a deep run. When Matt Cooke and Alex Burrows are line 3A and Line 3B has Isbister... thats not the kind of skill you imagine on a Cup winner. But its not a dire situation where the teams' survival is dependant on it.. its an “icing on the cake” situation , the Canucks right now have enough to make the playoffs *cross fingers* they could use the infamous “top 6 forward” to push them deeper.

With that being said , they dont need a superstar top 6 forward (though we wouldnt oppose one) , just somebody(ies) that has more upside than Cooke , Isbister , Burrows .. the three of them might hit 15 goals combined this season , let alone 15 goals each , which is a fair amount to expect from top 9 forwards. But as mentioned , its easier said than done in today's NHL.

Generally speaking of this situation in comparison to the previous era , Id rather have this team in need of scoring depth as opposed to a top scoring team via the WCE days with a need of clutch goaltending. Not alot of panic as there use to be in Vancouver , Luongo has calmed not only his team down but the province.

Thats how I see it at least.
