Why is Ryder sucking so bad this year?

The only thing that separated Ryder from marginal AHL-ers in previous years was his shot. He's not a good skater, isn't creative with the puck and he doesn't play well in his own end. Sadly, now he tenses up every time he gets the puck, and is unable to take advantage of his above-average shot, therefore rendering him useless.

Ryder's brain is broken and no one knows how to fix it.

Is there any way to make this response appear automatically everytime a non-Habs fan asks this question? I think we here at OTP have generally come to this conclusion. Laughing

Seriously, I keep cheering for the guy, but he's beyond hope at this point. Poor Higgins... Ryder's probably cost him a 35 g, 35 a season.

You know the Lightining wished they had him on Richards' wing, though, and I wouldn't blame them.

Corey Locke has been called up. Hamilton officially has no one left.

Huet has the flu. Quarantine him immediately and get Halak up here ASAP.

Other than that, same lineup as the past couple of games.

A. Kostitsyn - Plekanec - Kovalev
Latendresse - Koivu - S. Kostitsyn
Higgins - Lapierre - Ryder
Kostopolous - Chipchura - Dandenault

Markov - Komisarek
Hamrlik - Streit
Bouillon - Gorges

Price
( ??? )

Price and Chipchura sent down. Shocked

Halaklocke is up.

Do we have a light sked coming up or something?

Don't like the Chips move at all. I understand the Price/Halak swap, but calling up Locke? What the hell do we need a 5'8" offensive center that can't skate for? It's not like calling him up can improve his trade value... can it?

More lineup griping...

Tom Kostopolous, fresh off what may have been his best game as a Hab, sits with the return of Dandenault (personal) and Smolinski. Locke also sits.

So we have 8 d-men dressed. Rolling Eyes

A. Kostitsyn - Plekanec - Kovalev
Latendresse - Koivu - S. Kostitsyn
Higgins - Lapierre - Ryder
Streit - Smolinski - Dandenault

Markov - Komisarek
Hamrlik - Brisebois
Bouillon - Gorges

Huet
(Halak)

Didn't Carolina do this a few weeks back?

How's Gorges been playing? Is he been playing well enough that Streit has moved up to forward again?

I still think Streit's a better d-man. I'll put this move in a different light, I suppose. Carbo might be debating who's better between Brisebois and Gorges, and this is his way of deciding.

I like Gorges, but when O'Byrne gets healthy, I'd like to see something like this:

Markov-Komi
Hamrlik-Streit
Bouillon-O'Byrne

Gorges as 7th, Breeze as 8th.

We also just don't have enough forward spots available when all are healthy (Begin is still out). Streit needs to play, so I see this as the most logical lineup on the back end.

And Bosc, we've dressed 8 d-men previously this year, but I suppose calling Dandy a d-man is a bit antiquated at this point, since he's played about 2 shifts back there this year so far, and is our #9 d-man in reality if at all.

I agree 100% with these parings

And I'd go a step further and say bring the whole top 7 back for next year as well. The only reason not to would be if we could somehow get Emelin to come over, IMO. I don't think we should commit long term, big money to any d-men with Komi staring at UFA in another year, so re-signing Streit to a deal that is about 3 years, $5m-$7m total is very do-able especially since Dandy and Bouillon are off the books in '09 as well.

The only argument I see Carbo having that I'm willing to concede is that Bouillon needs a puck-carrying partner, but I really like Streit with Hamr so I'd roll the dice with this setup to get that pairing together. I also trust Bouillon a lot more again, he's slowly rounding back into his 2005-06 form which was his best year. He's made a couple of reads/takeouts recently that remind me of how highly he was thought of back then.

Is there a concensus on Hammer? Do you like having him in the lineup more than Souray? Has he been healthy this year?

Hammer is one of the most responsible defensive defencemen I've ever seen on the Habs. He's rarely caught out of place and he makes his partners better.

He's infinitely more versatile than Souray (who I still like and if this were a non-cap world...) and he's admirably filled the leadership void left by Souray and Rivet.

He's pretty sneaky at pinching too.

All in all I'd say he's been a resounding success, and so far no injuries to report.

Another thing with Hamrlik... he's made every D partner he's had so far this year look good. Sometimes they actually are good (Komisarek), sometimes they aren't (Brisebois), sometimes they're puckmovers (Streit), and sometimes they're young and still learning (O'Byrne, Gorges). All has had some of their best games playing with Roman this year. Even playing with Markov the past few seasons hasn't had the same magic formula that playing with Hamrlik has had so far.

Speaking of Emelin...

Guess who starts the biggest brawl of the year? Shocked

Lines in practice today:

A Kostitsyn - Plekanec - Kovalev
Higgins - Koivu - Ryder
Begin - Smolinski - S Kostitsyn
Latendresse - Lapierre - Dandenault

Kostopolous rotated onto the 4th line for Dandenault a couple of times.

A couple of notes...

Everyone is healthy save O'Byrne. So trade Ryder ASAP.

The entire 2nd line is just a permanent slump. Ideally, I'd like to see a 3rd line of Higgins - Lapierre - Dandy as a shutdown line. Just don't ask me what we do with the 2nd unit. It's constantly in need of a spark.

It's been a while since I posted one of these...

Hamrlik is out with the flu tonight vs. the Sens, and Ryder will sit a 2nd straight game.

A Kostitsyn - Plekanec - Kovalev
Higgins - Koivu - S Kostitsyn
Latendresse - Lapierre - Dandenault
Begin - Smolinski - Kostopolous

Markov - Komisarek
Gorges - Streit
Bouillon - Brisebois
