Yeah, I've heard alternative media described as the fifth estate, but someone already defined the fifth estate in the early 20th century as the dull nobodies, so it doesn't really apply.
The fourth estate covers all media, even the little guys. There's no reason to change centuries-old handles if they work. |
The "Dull nobodies" would be the 3rd estate - the commoners.  But hey - if you want the clergy to still be the first estate, then I'll go back to my old job, lol

Fifth Estate is any class or group in society other than the the clergy (First Estate), the nobility (Second Estate), the middle class (Third Estate), and the press (Fourth Estate)[1]. It has been used to describe trade unions, the poor, organized crime, German propaganda and spies during World War II (by the French). It can also be used to describe media that sees itself in opposition to mainstream (Fourth Estate) media.
OK, now I'm more confused.
