He's gotta celebrate while he can...

No, a guy who won't have anything to celebrate, and then will get traded to the Blues.

I just say that because Gillies has absolutely nothing to celebrate once this tourney is over and he has to come back to major junior. Fucking Blades.

I think Team USA's "my way or the highway" selection approach will keep fucking them over. It's ridiculous that they pass on so much talent just because they didn't buy into "the system" at age 16 or 17.

Who did they pass over this year? I thought they had kind of stopped that for the past couple of years.

Oh, they still pass on some real good players because of that policy.
Here's the big name they passed on this time around:

Great game! It should be a great re-match tomorrow against Sweden for the Gold!

As for team USA - Coach Bombay would have found a way to win... Very Happy Good Luck tomorrow against the Russians.

Bobby Mac has a few names here:

Where is Peterborough Pete defenceman Zach Bogosian, who is tabbed as a top 10 pick in the 2008 NHL entry draft? Or Montreal Canadien first rounder Ryan McDonagh, the talented defenceman from the University of Wisconsin? Or Montreal first rounder David Fischer or Colorado first rounder Kevin Shattenkirk? Or Boston College forward Ben Smith or Spokane Chief forward Drayson Bowman or Belleville Bull forward Eric Tangradi.

Strapping the goalie to the crossbar may not have produced worse results for them.

Wow, I didn't realize it was still that bad. Are these kids even getting invites to the camps?

A lot of those names were simply "coach's decisions". I know for sure that the Montreal picks were. I think that Drayson Bowman is another of the "snub us at 15/16, we'll snub you until you're 20" group.

The USA isn't alone in this policy. I think Slovakia does the same now (didn't use to) for players that go to major junior. In general, though, going to major junior isn't what's best for a European player's development anyways. There are exceptions, but most Euros aren't on the same development curve as North Americans.

You never know. It's the American narrative: A group of misfits comes together and despite many setbacks finds an unorthodox way to win against a superior and usually iconic foe. Perhaps this year an earlier loss and no bye would have served them better.

So this years results:

Canada Gold

Sweden Silver

Russia Bronze

Mason gets MVP!

Next year's tournament will be back in Canada in Ottawa so it should be electric. Lots of returning players on all the top teams as well.

edit: hopefully the medal girls will be equally hot... but somehow I doubt it.

Damn, the gold and silver packages for Ottawa are sold out. I'll see what I can scrounge up.
