| That's Burke and Bertuzzi with no Brad as May is on the shelf with an injury. The Ducks are starting to play better hockey with Neidermeyer's return inspiring them. The Ducks currently hold down 8th in the West but have played more games than any other team with 40 games behind them and a slim 3 point lead ahead of 9th place Chicago who have 4 games in hand. Both teams are 4-1 their last 5 games with the Canucks winning their last over Calgary and the Ducks losing to the Flames in their last game. For the most part the Ducks are healthy with May out, I see Hnidy and Dipenta sat against Calgary, not sure because of injury or poor play. The Canucks will be without Ohlund again. The Canucks have given up 6 goals the last 2 games without him on D. Kesler will be back and the Canucks will need him to go against Getzlaff, Perry and Kunitz who are the Ducks first unit. Then there's Doug Weight, whose washed up except against the Canucks whom he always seems to score upon. Big Bert isn't having a stellar season and doesn't appear to be able to regain his dominance he had 5 years ago but is coming around after returning from a concussion, scoring in last night's game. What's surprising is that he only has 23 PIM in 26 games. The Ducks played last night and should be the tired team. They will be physical as always and will try to intimidate the Canucks. Vancouver has had 3 days rest and should be able to take this one. 4-2 Canucks with an ENer. Game on PPV. |

I coughed up the whatever-it-cost for PPV to watch the game. Not a barn burner but still a satisfying victory and an important one as the Canucks put a little distance between them and the 8th placed Ducks.
For a tired team the Ducks outskated the Canucks it the 3rd period. I commented before the Ducks goal by Getzlaff that the Canucks had stopped skating on the 4 on 4 situation and were hanging back. Bang, the puck goes in. One important player the Ducks were missing that I forgot to mention was Sam Pahlsson. He's not a big scorer but still a presence for them. Neither Travis Moen nor Francois Beauchemin had a good game for Anaheim and they were very prominent last season. To be fair to Moen, he got the raw deal when McGeough fingered him for goalie interference at the same time Weaver got 2 for interfering on Moen in the first place. For certain persons who call the Canucks announcers blatant homers, Larshied said that Moen got shafted before the replay was shown during the broadcast. The 3 stars were Luongo, Henrik Sedin and Scott Neidermayer, who despite having recently returned can fly out there. I thought Matt Cooke deserved the 2nd star. Over the last 3 seasons I have heaped plenty of criticism on him but to be fair he has played really well the last 15 or so games. He's forechecking, backchecking, making clean hits and not taking stupid penalties. When he chips in the odd goal to go along with this type of play, he becomes the role/depth player every team could use. He's playing the best hockey of his career right now.

From what I saw, I thought it was Weaver who got the shaft - Moen was heading through the crease and Weaver was the only guy keeping him from slamming directly into Luongo. I thought Moen could have easily gone around Weaver and Luongo but didn't. I Weaver was Ohlund-sized he might have had a better shot at preventing him from interfering with Luongo.

Really? I didn't really see this - although I only started watching in the middle of the first period - I didn't really notice him that much, other than the goal. I'm not so certain about Henrik getting 2nd star - the Canucks offence was nonexistent in the third, and barely reg. I thought Mitchell quietly played a very effective game in a shutdown role with Kesler's unit. I would have picked Luongo, Niedermeyer, and Mitchell.
I would agree that it wasn't the barn-burner that the Phlegms game was, but then that's the way this team likes to win... I thought it was still a very effective game defensively. The Ducks barely mounted a threat during the entire game and were relegated to keeping the puck on the perimeter. Watching Bert made me realize how little I miss his no-backchecking, lazy ass out there.
