There's literally nothing new or exciting happening in music. I blame the jerks running the record labels. With their American Idiot, err Idol and the copycat Canadian Idiot hosted by the ever sneering Ben (My Face Should Be Smeared In Fresh Dogshit) Mulroney, they have this idea they can create talent out of nothing to sell to the masses. And of course, control everything done and money made by that "talent." The members of the RIAA should be spending less time and money chasing, bullying and threatening teenagers downloading tunes off their PCs in the basement and spend that time and money finding and developing real talent. When it takes an Nano Ipod ad to break Leslie Feist instead of the record labels, you know these corporate cocksuckers have fucked everything up with their greed. Bill Maher was correct when he stated that record executives were people who didn't have the social skills to be pimps.

As usual the music industry is structured like a reverse pyramid - the shit usually sits at the top (think top-40, Idol programs, MuchMusic, CRTC gestapo radio and the like) and the good stuff remains relatively underground, although electronic distribution and advertising have made many small bands easy to find online if you know where to look.

I find with so many options out there, it can be difficult to find good music if you don't know where to start.

Without knowing your musical tastes might I recommend these albums, which I enjoyed immensely in 2007. Start with Timbervision by National Parcs (sampled sounds of the Quebec wilderness over southern soul vocals, it's brilliant):

Justice - † (Dance)
LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver (NY style dance rock)
Ghislain Poirier - No Ground Under (Dancehall/hip hop)
Muscles - Guns Babes Lemonade (Aussie party music)
Prinzhorn Dance School - s/t (minimalist rock)
Panda Bear - Person Pitch (Orchestral Beach Boys ambient)
Band of Horses - Cease to Begin (Alt country post-grunge)
Stars - In the Bedroom After the War (Art rock)
Code Pie - The Most Trusted Name in Yous (Blues rock)
Holy Fuck - LP (experimental sounds)
Battles - Mirrored (fusion art rock)
Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare (Brit rock)
Against Me! - New Wave (punk)
Buck 65 - Situation (poet rap)
Daniel Belanger - L'echec du materiel (Quebec songwriter)
Albert Hammond - Yours to Keep (Strokes guitarist, solo)
Maximo Park - Our Earthy Pleasures (Brit rock)
!!! - Myth Takes (Dance/punk)

Country is going strong, lots of solid new artists. The heavies are a bit off their game lately, but some newbies have great debut albums..

Hmmm well I gave a listen to each....Pelican kind of sounds like OSI.

The other two are not my thing.......guttural yelling and screaming bands offend my senses. I appreciate it though.

That's why I am not real into Trivium and A7X's original stuff. The saving grace for those two in the beginning was the guitar work behind it though. Why I like Static X is a different story though......because he sort of yells.

Diamond Nights had a good debut CD this year.

Unfortunately they year was led by Daughtry (snicker) Linkin Park, Maroon 5 and Fall Out Boy.......

There seemed to be more groups using a fusion of Symphonic metal. Therion has been around forever but Kamelot, Nightwish and Jorn released CDs if you are into that sort of thing.

2007 was a terrible year unless you are a big fan of indie which seems to have really exploded and become mainstream (going to need a new title).

Thanks for taking the time to listen to them. Yeah, I guess that's just the direction metal is going in these days, the bands who are blending styles are doing some very innovative things, but if you're more into a certain style they likely won't sound too appealing.

If you're more into traditional metal, I suppose you've already listened to 2006's "Blood Mountain" by Mastodon and "Inhuman Rampage" by Dragonforce. I like both of those records. "Pink" by Boris is also cool if you don't mind singing in Japanese and heavy distortion.

Too bad we weren't able to continue the 70's, when commercial and non-commercial music were able to co-exist.

Pelican's guitars sounded like Thrice's, I think.

Not a fan of the kind of stuff like Pig Detroyer. Haven't listened to Neurosis yet...
