http://www.cbc.ca/canada/edmonton/story/2007/12/13/katz-oilers.html

He's now offering $190M for the team with a commitment to spend at least an additional $100M towards a new arena.

Cal Nichols has stepped down as chairman and publicly said he is in favor of accepting the offer. I'm not sure on the nuances of the structure here, as to whether individual owners can tender their shares to Katz or whether it has to be unanimous, but this is probably the only way a new arena happens as the current owners don't have deep enough pockets.

Katz is Edmonton born and raised and clearly passionate about the success of the team. It would be a real boon to the city to have him on board as owner.

Even though they said that the For Sale was gone, this seemed to be inevitable.

Wow. And the brainless twats reject the offer again.

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2008/01/02/oilers_ownership/

What a bunch of crap. Why do they have to ask whether he'll commit to keeping the team in Edmonton? He's the only billionaire in town and has lived here his entire life. Of course he'll keep them in Edmonton! Rolling Eyes

And what does it matter what he'd kick in for a new arena to the current owners? That's really none of their business what arrangement he'll come to with the city and provincial gov't.

It's a good thing I'm not a fan of this on-ice and off-ice turd of a team.

The reason the current group isn't selling is more because the team is actually profitable right now and they have a chance to recoup their original losses. No reason to believe Katz won't make another bid next year, so I'm sure many of the local owners will sell eventually, but not after getting back some much deserved returns.

They've already been recouping losses for a couple years and the one time capital gain they get upon selling more than makes up for any cumulative operating losses they've been seeing.

Selling out now gets them paid faster and completely risk free.

There's no reason to think that the team can continue to sell out with the dud lineup they've put on the ice. For the first time since the run to the finals, tickets are actually available on gameday...

Just saying, if it was me, I'd get out while the getting is good.

I think it's just trying to get more leverage in the sale, which I think is inevitable. This is just the spin to the public.

Just my opinion, though.

Please keep Lowe and MacTavish so I can laugh at Oiler fans and their team's lack of success for years to come.

Don't forget Reasoner = Sakic. Rolling Eyes

To be fair, he's going to praise everyone involved with the Oilers at least until the sale is approved by the BoG, which is likely 8 weeks away. He isn't going to want to indicate he's prepared to shake things up until at least then.

Yup, you're 100% correct. Anything said now is nothing more than lip service.
