Ugh, this is part of a longer-running problem with my landlord which stems entirely from the reconstruction of our balconies which hasn't been complete in something like 3 years now, since the contractor went AWOL.
The long and short is that some raccoons moved into the cavity that exists between our ceiling and the upstairs' neighbors floor as a result of the construction. This has brought a whole host of problems and health hazards which we're working on and in various states of frustration with the landlord, but since there are a number of pet owners on OTP, I'll ask about one specific one here: fleas.
We don't even have a freaking dog and we have fleas. We'd been getting bites for a long time before we even realized what it was -- fucking raccoon fleas. It's beginning to drive me insane, and the prospect of having to shell out huge bucks to dryclean, disinfect, etc. etc. is upsetting (although if it's substantial I'd probably go to the housing tribunal and request a reimbursement, but it's not certain they'd grant it).
In your guys' experience, how have you dealt with flea infestations, if at all? Again, we have no pets, so the problem is the apartment itself. If I use one of these "flea bombs" I read about, will the chemicals seep into my furniture, rug, etc.? Can do set one off in a room with electronics or books?
Any advice? _________________

I married a women who all bugs, fleas included would rather bite than me. Good solution and it's earth friendly.
The thought of using a bomb worries me too I'd research it well before doing it. _________________ It's not you Sundin, it's me...please just leave...and don't look back....please please do not look back. |

If you are renting I don't understand how it wouldn't be the landlord's issue. You should be able to call in Terminex or something. _________________

bathe and give the raccoons their flea control pills.....
Really all you can do as long as the little bandits are there and keeping the bugs well fed is try and keep them under control. Vacuum a lot! |

| Some firefighters were saying that scat from a larger predator will scare away pesky critters. They had co-workers of theirs go to the zoo and scoop up lion shit to put in their gardens in an attempt to keep the cats from rolling around in there. They were pulled over by les gendarmes who asked to look in the truck, thinking the smell might have been a dead body. So if you can stand it, putting lion or grizzly bear dung courtesy of your local zoo (no, not parliament!) around the entrance to the crawl space may discourage the masked bandits from returning. That is if you can put up with the odors. |

As mentioned, I'm not asking for tips for the raccoons or my landlord -- I'm already dealing with this in the normal ways that tenants do.
I just wanted to know if any of you have had experience with killing fleas, since these are actually inside my apartment and more than anything I'd just like to get rid of them. _________________

If you want to get rid of them, you have to deal with them at the source, right? Killing them might rid you of them for a bit, but if you don't get rid of the source, they'll be back in no time... _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

| Actually, my parents sprinkle their dog's food with garlic to keep the fleas off her. It's worked for years. So, my suggestion would be leave a little treat for the buggers but sprinkle it with garlic - it apparently does better than any insect repellent ever could... |

Looks like a good link, thanks.
I've laid traps now -- the public health officer said I'd need to verify that they are, in fact, fleas -- but have gotten nothing as of yet.
I'm thinking it might be another type of biting parasite, since to my understanding fleas are actually quite visible.
It's clearly something, though: my neighbors across the hall (above whose apartment the raccoons have largely moved now) have been getting bites too. _________________

I thought that link might work after reading the about us section....it looked like pretty much same thing happened to the guy that came up with it. I feel for you. That's got to be a terrible feeling. _________________

Go to Canadian Tire. Buy a slingshot and some ball bearings. When the raccoons come around, shoot them - aim for the head. A well placed shot will usually kill one - slowly. Skin the raccoon and leave it's skin near the enterance to the hole. Burry the rest or sell the corpse as 'rabbit' at an 'ethnic' grocery store. Your problems will be over. _________________ www.jimdalling.com |

My grandpa used a hook and a shovel for some coons that moved into a friend's attic. The hook to get em out worked fine, the shovel appeared to until the thing walked away overnight. Raccoons are tough fuckers. _________________ Bring back the old OTP!
