SCHAEFER FEELS FOR FORMER TEAMMATES IN OTTAWA
BOSTON - Even though Peter Schaefer has his own playoff series to worry about, the Boston Bruins winger can't help but feel some sympathy for his old friends on the Ottawa Senators.
Schaefer said he watched the Sens lose Game 3 of their series with the Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday night to go down 3-0.
''With a lot of friends I used to play with on the team, I definitely watched,'' Schaefer said prior to Boston's game against the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday. ''It was tough to watch.''
Schaefer says he still exchanges phone calls and text messages with several members of the Senators on a regular basis, but the dynamic of the relationships have obviously changed a fair bit. |
Oooh, diss to the Celtics:

This is the first time in Schaefer's career that he's played for an American team after spending his first three seasons in Vancouver and the previous four seasons in Ottawa. He says competing for the public's attention in Boston makes it a completely different experience than in Ottawa, and that has both its good and bad sides.
''There's no Patriots and no Red Sox in Ottawa, you're the only show,'' he said. ''So that can be great, but when things don't go well it can also get really negative.''

The nucleus of this team is locked up for some time.
Heatley till 2014
Spezza till 2015
Alfie till 2012
Fisher till 2013
Phillips till 2011
Volchenkov till 2010
Plus Gerber for another and Emery for two (although I'm guessing he'll be bought out).
I guess they have enough time to figure out if Bass, Foligno, Hennessey, Zubov, Lee, Elliot can provide better secondary play than the current crop, but Ottawa isn't a strong enough market to stick through extended rough times. They have to turn this around fast, and Melnyk has to sit with Roy Mlakar and determine if Murray is doing more harm than good at this point.
I know of a great GM candidate who came on the market just a few days ago. _________________ John McCain is fit as a fiddle… Is 71 the new 30?” - Fox News' Rich Lowry

If they weren't in so much cap trouble I'd be scared to death they'd make some insane offer to Theo. Then again after Barrasso, Hasek, and now Gerber they'd best watch themselves on the free agent goalie front...
The Sens better hope to hell Lee pans out. As far as scoring from the blueline next season they got Meszaros and...and... |

They'll need to sign a discount goalie off the UFA market and hope he becomes a Ellis/Conklin type, otherwise it's Gerber's team next year as well.
They should also look at another puckmover for sure. _________________ "Oh my God. There she is. Lovely Sally Slater. I should speak to her. But what the hell can I say? Anything that doesn't mention that I masturbate over her memory is probably a good idea."

After his Conn Smythe performance, I don't know if they'll be able to afford him. _________________ "Oh my God. There she is. Lovely Sally Slater. I should speak to her. But what the hell can I say? Anything that doesn't mention that I masturbate over her memory is probably a good idea."
