Well I'd like to know. On Monday I enter my 5 credit hours of French 1 at school...that's a whole lot of Francais....not sure what I expect out of this class. I've always wanted to fine tune my high school limited French skills so I hope this is it.....plus it fills my Global Issues requirement.

I've received several comments of.....what the hell are you taking French for in a Spanish state? Quick answer is.....fuckers I am out of here when the kids are done and damn it I am going north hell or highwater!

Anyway I'd appreciate a sounding board.

Enough to get around, order at a resturant and read most of a newspaper. I can also watch RDS french language hockey and follow along pretty well. I am not fluent. When someone here posts in French I can figure it out given time.

I spoke virtually no french (aside from the farce that was high school Grade 11 French) before going to Quebec in 1998. After only 3 years in Montreal I was reasonably good in conversational french and my medical french was good enough to let me work in french speaking hospitals. Total immersion was the only way for me. I can sum up my experience as follows:

First year: spoke really bad french to everyone who would listen; everyone would answer back in english

Second year: spoke passable but halting french to everyone who would listen; everyone would answer back in french..... but slowly.

Third year: spoke decent french to everyone who would listen; everyone would speak back in regular french.

I've been away from Montreal since 2001 and unfortunately have lost a lot of the language since then but think that I could pick it back up if I had to.

I apparently got my grade nine required French credit in High school and that is it, so basically I do not speak any French.

I did French through Gr.12 and a couple courses in college... I also do not speak any french.

Though, if you were to give me a transcript of a french conversation about your favourite sports, I'd probably be able to tell you what was said... given an hour or so.

The only thing I remember from French 12 is the American Sign Language alphabet.

I took it as optional in grade 10. My teachers told me that I was really good at it, but I never went on with it. I'd probably having an easier time reading than speaking, but even that being limited because it's been so long.

I regret that having studied formally it from grades 6 through 11 I have retained very little of it. Immersion is the only way to go.

Je regrette qu'après l'avoir étudié formellement des catégories 6 à 11 j'aie maintenu très peu de lui. L'immersion est la seule manière d'aller.
