Holy crap! #1 in the world pretty much exclusively since Oct. 2003 and she quits two weeks before the French Open starts, where she is a 4 time champion?

This is... unbelievable.

Henin was one of the few ladies in recent who did her best to play the small tournaments too. She had a small frame and was clearly starting to wear down.

It's crazy she would retire before the French Open, but if she didn't feel physically ready, maybe it's the best choice.

It's a strange downside to female tennis players making more money on and off the tour - most don't seem interested in sticking around for the long haul, although many of them have been playing in tournaments since they were 10 years old.

From a fan's perspective, this really opens up the French Open field a LOT.

I'm going to miss some of the early round action this year due to being on holidays, but it should make for some VERY interesting tennis in the later rounds.

I hate to see the sport lose someone so dominant with so much good tennis left in them, though. You're right about female tennis players, though. They're quitting early.

Sharapova is now the #1 ranked player.
