anyway....because this site is so rocking lately.....

Sanford blows it in the SO and breaks his stick on a Pisani goal.

I've come to the conclusion after initially thinking that the Canucks were a good team that their fortunes rest solely on Luongo.

Question Sanford's been playing great, including tonight.

The Oilers are 10-1 in the shootout -- what are you gonna do?

The Canucks are a defensive team with little to do on offense -- this is no surprise, it's a salary-capped league and their money is tied up in Luongo and a few other players. That doesn't make them a bad team, it makes them a team with a lot of emphasis on the back end.

They're also coming off an insane road trip and half the lineup is out injured. No one really expected them to win 7-1 tonight.

Seriously though do the Canucks occupy 1st in the NW without Luongo? Hell no.

Reminds me of a Flames team a few years back....they won games but couldn't get it done when it counted.

Of course not -- what team does well without their best player? And if they didn't have Luongo, they'd have a different starting goalie and a bunch of cap space to spend elsewhere.

What happened to the Nucks days when Naslund was their best player? Where were the Sisters tonight? I liked them much better when their play wasn't so reliant on Luongo.

Well, it was a calculated risk to go to a more defensive system, but I think so far 99% of the fanbase has been pretty happy with it.

A disappointing loss, but you can't blame it on Sanford who played well. I note that the last shoot-out loss to the Oil, Luongo was in net.

Seriously, the Oil have 6 fucking wins this year without the shootout. Their success at it makes a mockery of the NHL standings.

First of all I openly admit that my team sucks at the shoot-out so far this year, however, I've stated many times since the rule came into effect that I don't like it.

[rant]

There's nothing wrong with a tie. Two teams battling to a standstill should share the points. Sure have an OT period to see if that can settle it, but a shoot out is silly. A free throw competition in Basketball, a home run competition in baseball or a field goal competition in football would be just as silly.

Again, I'm happy to get a loser point because that's how it works but in my opinion there should be no point awarded to get to OT.

It should be 2 points for a win, 0 points for a loss and 1 point each for a tie. That way we wouldn't have the situation now where some games are worth 3 points in the standing race and some points are worth 2.

Edmonton is good at the shoot-out and I congratulate them, and as long as that's the rule then good on them for capitalizing. However, it's a stupid rule and it trivializes the outcome.

P.s I question the effect the shoot-out has on new fan attraction or old fan retention. Have any studies been done?

Judging the Nux right now is judging them while they're down and out. A crazy grueling schedule a flu bug and untimely injuries to two key players and two other roster players. The biggest problem is probably the flu. You ask where the twins were trying not to vomit on Nazzy or the trainer. No doubt about it that Luongo is our best player am I sorry that our best player is our goalie NO effing chance! The shoot out adds some excitement to the game being played but really adds nothing to the game itself. Some of the best shooters and goaltenders are the worst guys to go to in the shoot out. Speaking of the game going to shoot out don't you think that if the twins and NAzzy were even close to 100% at least on of them would have been in the rotation? I mean Taylor Pyatt? I challenge anyone judging the team based on this road trip to also judge the team based on their November performance.

Captain, I completely agree with you. I don't berate Edmonton for winning games in this fashion, I berate the NHL for allowing an inferior team to succeed based on a very specialized skill that is abandoned for the post-season.

If we are never going back to the tie format, then I advocate the 3 point game system... for every single game. Edmonton should only get 2 out of a possible 3 points for those 10 wins. Teams should be rewarded more for winning in regulation if they are compensated for losing in OT/shootout, when the rules of the game change.

3 points for a regulation win, 2 points for an OT/shootout win, 1 point for an OT/shootout loss, 0 for a regulation loss.

2 points for a win. 0 points for anything but a win after a 5-minute overtime. Guaranteed the NHL will be a far more exciting league.

Seriously we're the ONLY team to beat the Oil in a shootout? Wow.

Anyway I hate the OT loss point more than anything. And yeah the shootout is a gimmick that got old after one season. Enough is enough, bring back ties, if you REALLY have a problem with it then just do what the NBA does and just keep playing OT until someone wins.

I agree,But go 5 minutes 4 on 4 than go to 3 on 3 until the game is decided,I think this would be far more exciting than a shootout Cool

My ideal would've been to increase OT to 10 minutes of 4 on 4 with no shootout, and if it's still tied, it's a tie.

And no loser points.

What goes around comes around... The Nucks were money in the bank in OT last season; less so in the SO. So IMO, it's karmic debt.

Success in 4 on 4 situations isn't as problematic as success in a shootout determining which teams are playoff worthy and not.
