I've just been warned of a goalie requirement for my office pool... how convenient. _________________

It'll probably be me yelling at Hasek more than any other player on the ice. _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

Goalies in office pools are terrible ideas.
Well, if you believe in the Sharks, it's Nabokov. You just chose the goalie for the team you think will win, or if that guy goes before you pick him, then his opposition.
Detroit isn't an easy choice... but it'll be Hasek to start at least. _________________ It's backwards time. |

The main reason I hate the inclusion of goalies is because they always not only include, but also over-weight the shutout. I hate the shutout as a statistic (it is no more meaningful than 1-goal games, for example, and is entirely subsumed by wins and GAA), and the reverence it gets from hockey fans when it's generally just the product of a generally good game (no different from many other generally good games) with luck, team defense or opposition ineptitude making the coincidence happen.
But almost all pools I know of give way too many points for a shutout, which is no different than adding in a 5-point random draw every week or so.
In this case, it's just wins and -- yes -- shutouts, along with offensive points (which I am ignoring entirely) so yes, I agree, it's more a "team-picking" pool than anything, and I'm not sure how much priority to afford the goalie here too as it's really just maximum 4 points per series, apart from the shutout crap.
What has Babcock actually said? "Playing the hot hand"? (BTW, I'm now leaning a bit more toward an Anaheim repeat -- particularly after having read the article you posted -- so I'm thinking I might shoot for Giguère over Nabokov). _________________

"Dom will start" or something to the same effect. _________________ Bring back the old OTP!
