It's the new model Russian Super League, with big plans but smaller budgets (a payroll range of approximately $10m to $25m will be enforced). So far, it only spans three countries, and hasn't left the old USSR territory as of yet. Still, that's a really widespread league, especially for the poor souls playing for Amur Khabarovsk. And Canucks fans complain about travel disadvantage:

As has been pointed out, there aren't a lot of players in Russia or that have signed up for this new incarnation that NHL teams don't think are replaceable, but they have begun swiping Sweden's top players and are in a better position now to retain talent. It'll be interesting to see if the KHL could potentially become a European hockey monolith the founders envision.

And they put the team in Riga, Latvia, in the same division! Laughing

The Braves were too, remember (NL West), and the Hawks were marginally better, being "Central." It's like the entire world of professional sports got together and passed out an upside-down map.

Looks like Wayne Fleming, an assistant coach for Calgary, will be moving to Belarus to coach Dynamo Minsk:

What's interesting is that they first offered the job to John Paddock.
